Good Video Card Upgrade For Under $200?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what kind of video card i should get to upgrade from a Geforce 3 64MB card that would be under $200 for my little brother. He is always complaining that Warcraft III is slow when there are big fight scenes. Any Suggestions. If anyone cares, his computer is:

Athlon 1600xp+

BIOSTAR VIA KT400 M7VIT

Geforce 3 64MB

512MB Ram

Windows 98

Ok, lets put it this way, i give you a list of cards I can get for under $200 or just above it, and you tell me which one you would suggest maybe from personal experience or from others experiences that you know of with the card.

Lets change my range to around $130, but am willing to go higher if performance will increase significantly.

$230 - RADEON 9700 Pro

$218 - RADEON 9700 128MB

$150 - RADEON 9600 Pro Ultra

$189 - RADEON 9600 Pro Ultimate

$190 - RADEON 9600 Pro 256MB

$120 RADEON 9600 Pro 128MB

$125 - RADEON 9600 256MB

$115 - RADEON 9600 128MB

$132 - RADEON 9500 128MB

$114 - RADEON 9500 64MB

$126 - GeForce FX 5600 Ultra 128MB

$140 - GeForce FX 5600 256MB

$125 - GeForce FX 5600 128MB

$134 - GeForce4 TI 4800

$181 - GeForce4 TI 4600

$194 - GeForce4 TI 4600 8x AGP

$126 - GeForce4 TI 4400

$98 - GeForce4 TI 4200 128MB - I currently own this card on my own machine. I think its a pretty fast card. I would like to know what the Radeon counter to this card would be or a Direct X 9 compatible card. I'm kinda skeptical of the FX cards as I here they aren't up to par compared to Radeon cards.

I just recently purchased an XFX Geforce FX 5200 256DDR from tigerdirect for $99. Haven't used it yet though, but it's for my bro, so I didn't want to pay much. Figured that was a pretty good deal for a 256.

EDIT: Warcraft III runs extremely smooth on my geforce 3 Ti200 (i think it's 128mb, I'll have to go check)

yeah they make 256 5200 thou theres no need for it . only one game out now uses more than 128megs of mem and thats ut2k3 . but the lack of raw processor power isnt even going to let that card use half of its ram . hell the 9800pro 128 out benches the 256megs in some benches . basically 256of vid ram is just hype right now nothing needs it
