espn2829 Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 I need a 250GB hard drive but I am a tough time deciding which one to get. Here are my choices: HITACHI Deskstar T7K250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822145087 Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822148065 Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822144701 I have a Seagate hard drive and it has been very good to me so I like Seagate and they are my top choice. However, I am willing to consider the other drives as well if someone can convince me. My criteria for choosing a hard drive is (in order): 1. Reliability - it must be very reliable and last me a long time 2. Performance - obviously I want something very fast 3. Quietness - I prefer a quiet hard drive Thanks in advance
JediCreator Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 I have burned evry drive on the planet except for Seagate.........They rock in my book. Whatever you do, stay away from Mator
Snowpro Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 From the ones ya posted, the Seagate has the longest warranty at 5 years. All the Seagates Ive owned were noisey. If I had to choose between your three, would have to go with the Hitachi cause dont like noise & WD has high death rate at my house. Ive had the best luck with Maxtor's: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822144358 Big HDD gotta go with the 16mb cache
Guest area51 Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 I have had good luck with both WD and Seagate... Bottom line is everything I care about is sitting on a Seagate... Can't beat the warranty and have been bullet proof for me. As stated above though, they do seem to be a tiny bit noiser.
espn2829 Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 thanks guys, Seagate it is for me  the 250GB 7200.8 is around $110 and the 250GB 7200.9 is around $160. Do you think its worth spending $50 extra for the newer model?

ComeUpon Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 If you don't need the 16MB cache you can rule out the WD. Between the Hitachi and the Seagate, I, personally, would take the Seagate.
Thasp Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Seagate make some of the quietest drives now, and in addition, some of the most reliable.

ooeric Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 i vouch seagate all the years i used them. np i still have a usable 9 year old seagate. rofl 4gb.. lol dont get WD them crap are crap (maybe cept for raptors.. but those fail too) ever seen the underside of them? alot of them actually has RUST or RUST like discoloration which alot of times causes them to fail
ooeric Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 oh ya. make sure you get the ones produced in singapore not the ones made in china singapore ships with clear plastic cases while china uses oem static bags
espn2829 Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 thanks for all the help guys I think Seagate is my top choice at the moment due to my experience with them and your recommendations. however, I can get a larger capacity drive for almost the same price which will be faster since the 7200.8 isn't that fast. How is the Maxtor Maxline 3? I heard that it is designed for corporations so it will run 24/7 with no problems. it also has a 5 year warranty, same as Seagate. it seems to me that this is a great hard drive do you guys agree with this? anyone have experience with the Maxtor Maxlines?
