OK, pretty big Update here and some good news. No, make that Great News.

 

FreeCableGuy over at the TTR (www.TheTechRepository.com) has found a way to incorporate Intel Core Temp readings into MBM5.

I've also had a lot of reports lately that MBM5 is working on many new and old Abit boards by selecting "uGuru" under the configuration wizard.

(Got some buds with MSI boards checking stuff out as well)

 

Now before DFI NF4 owners get all excited they need to know this:

Caveat #1

If you install "Update_3" from Alex you will "lose" the Vdimm, Chipset and Battery Voltage readings in the DFI NF4 Config file posted here.

I believe if you re-install the DFI NF4 config file after the update everything will be back to normal (testing it, so bear with me).

Caveat #2

Free Cable Guy's new Plug-in will allow Reading Intel Core Temps NOT AMD at this time.

(Supports Yonah, Conroe/Allendale/Woodcrest/Merom, and Kentsfield/Clovertown.)

 

Caveat #3

Free Cable Guy's new Plug-in can read up to 16 cores and will utilize Sensors #24 down to #9.

So, if you were going to use _xhp_'s nVidia Plug-in for your graphic card you will have a problem.

 

Now Free Cable Guy is already aware of the sensor # issue and is working on a revision for his program.

I've sent PMs and e-mails to FCG, Alex Van Kaam, and _xhp_.

 

These guys are light years ahead of me in "smarts" so maybe you'll see MBM5 even more "complete" in terms of readings and working on many boards in the near future.

UPDATED 8-26-2005 - Reading NV Card Temps

_xhp_ did some awesome work with the NVidia cards.

If you are having any problems with _xhp_'s plugins please post exactly which version of the plugin you are using (zip file name is enough).

Always let us know if you see the temperatures in the nv display properties and the forceware version you are using.

If you don't see the temperatures in the NV display properties you won't see them with the mbm5nvdriver plugin...

You might see them with the mbm5rivatuner plugin if you set rivatuner to use one of the specific plugings for the sensor chips, but this depends on your GPU card.

Now Install MBM5 version 5.370

You need to replace the default Data File with the posted Data files.

Do NOT use configuration wizard.

Just close program and reboot when asked to chose configuration wizard..

 

Download and install MBM5370.

Do NOT use the Configuration Wizard. Reboot after program installation.

 

Then download the file called "MBMDataFinal".

Then right click it the RAR file and extract it to your desktop.

 

Now you will see a folder called "MBMData".

 

Now right click that folder and rename it to "Data".

 

Now right click it again and click "copy".

 

Go to C:Program FilesMotherboard Monitor 5

 

This part always breaks me up.

You should see a bunch of folders and some other crap.

 

Now right click and "paste".

 

When the prompt appears asking you to overwrite files tell it yes to overwrite.

Once that is done all the new settings will be there and when you load up MBM5 you will see everything come up.

NOTE: Max wattage on MB Fan Headers is 0.52A x 12V = 6.24 watts per fan header, to a total max of 2.1 amps on all headers or 25.2 watts total for all fan headers

Only Fan Headers 1, 2 & 3 support RPM Monitoring. Headers 4 & 5 at the bottom of motherboard DO NOT support RPM sensing.

 

Are My Temps Too High?

 

Yes, they can always be cooler

The PWMIC and Chipset devices are designed to handle a lot of heat.

55 degrees on the chipset is very common.

So is 50 on PWMIC. (Up to 60 at load, it's rated to 100C+)

Some processors will go up to 50 under full load.

Video Card temps can approach 80 degrees with stock cooling after intensense usage.

Don't panic with temps like these but start thinking about better cooling.

Case Air Flow and careful cable management can bring them down dramatically.

 

"The easiest way to get better temps is to get a bigger case or add more fans" - old Cantundastanian adage.

What is PWMIC = Pulse Width Modulated Integrated Circuit.

3-Phase Design on the DFINF4 filters the raw voltage off the PSU.

 

The sensor is circled in green. It is definately affected by air flow and heat generated in the area.

The actual PWMIC is the black rectangular chip below the Vdimm MOSFET .

The three Huge Heatsings are soldered on to the MOSFETS that supply the board.

 

There are a number of Chipset cooling mods available.

They are not a cure for cancer by any means. Yes, you do have to remove the board to do anything to the chipset fan or heatsink.

The EverCool VC-RE does a fantastic job of cooling the Chipset and is much quieter than the stock DFI fan.

What is it? - Pulse Width Modulation Integrated Circuit

It actually consists of three parts

1. PWMIC - rectangular chip below VDimm MOSFET and to left of ATX Connector

2. The three MOSFETS with Heatsinks soldered to them

3. The sensor - to right of CPU and left of sinked MOSFETs

 

What does it do? -

The circuit controls/adjusts/filters voltages from PSU to supply the board components

 

What are the proper PWMIC temps? -

Typically between 45 degrees and 60 degrees under load.

A lot will depend on case air flow, size of fan and overlap on heatsink, size of case, heat generated by CPU.

I don't think a blanket statement that over 50 degrees will cause instability is valid at all.

I've had numerous rigs prime succesful overclocks at 55-57 (with extra fans removed) without issue. Again a lot of variables here.

 

How do you lower the PWM IC temp? -

I think most use a fan of some type because it can often be a "deadspot" since it's blocked often by HDDs, cables. etc.

If you read on there are some great thermal pics from BigBruin as well as "hotspots" that could have additional heatsinks added.

Thermal paste won't cut it, but Arctic Alumina or some Chomerics "tape" may secure them properly.

I haven't experienced any increase in clocks by using additional heatsinks but it may be the way to go if fan noise is objectionable to you.

 

Again, I'm not an engineer or an IT guy. Just trying to help here. So feel free to post comments or questions.

 

If you have a Digital Voltmeter you can check the voltages at test points.

If you don't know what you are doing you will probably "dork" your rig.

Confused about Dual 16X PC Slots?

 

Regarding the DFI NF4 PCI-e slots

 

With the jumpers in the standard position.. The top slot is 16x and the bottom slot is 2x..

 

With the jumpers in the SLI position .. BOTH slots are 8x..

 

If you intend to use the bottom slot then you would want to move the "jumpers" to the SLI position and use BOTH at 8x.

(Expert/Venus board do NOT use the jumpers, the settings are in the Bios)

 

There is NO WAY to get the bottom slot OR both slots to work at 16x..

 

There is no difference in performance when using a 16x slot to a 8x slot..

Nothing available now even comes close to saturate the 8x slots bandwidth not to mention the 16x slot..

 

Benchmarks show less than 1-3% difference between the two slots.

No, the manual is not wrong. There are two different specs involved. One is the physical size of the slot. Both slots are physical X16 slots.

 

The confusion comes about when you start talking about the speed of the slot.

 

In the normal configuration the top slot is setup for X16 speed and the bottom slot for X2.

 

When you move the SLI jumpers, it reconfigures both slots to X8 speed.

 

Outside of the very newest, most video cards seem to utilize about X6 speed from the PCIe slot, so running your card in a X8 configuration will not slow it down at all.

Finding Out your XP CD Key if you lose the case

The Windows XP CD Key is required to reinstall the operating system.

If you have lost it, you can retrieve it from the Windows registry:

1) Open the Registry Editor

2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCALMACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft WindowsNT CurrentVersion.

3) Find ProductId. The CD Key is digits 6 thought 15.

Yes I ralize that any monitoring software is not accurate but I've been messing around with MBM5 (5370vers) and the Ultra D. Think I have a handle on it.

I've been checking various software apps as well as bios readings against it and it seems to work for me. There will be errors caused by other apps like SmartGuardian running. Noticed that temps seem to be labeled incorrectly in Everest as well. 12V reads low compared to meter. fan 1=cpu RPM sensor only fan 2= Exhaust RPM sensor only fan3 = chipset

 

 

I am pretty sure that if you used my configuration settings it would work with minor Label changes in the dashboard
