Not as far as I know. Because CPU functions are still

necessary to run DOS.

The memory testing needs to be run in DOS so that it

is run seperate from the cache memory functions

entirely. Which will happen if run under Windows.

The real reason for running memory tests in DOS is because Windows itself is a memory HOG and

the memory Windows occupies can't be tested (stepped on) the the memory test program. That

would leve a ton of memory untested.

Memtest86 doesn't run in DOS. It uses it's own, propriatary, OS that has a smaller foot print

than DOS freeing up even more low memory for testing.

UXD makes probably the best diagnostic tools available and run in their own proprietary enviroment(not even in DOS). I have used this software package on over 5000 systems and have yet to find anything better. You can find more info @ UXD.com

actually, memtest86 doesn't run in DOS ... but on it's own modified linux kernel.

the reson? so that it can take over all the RAM (talk about being a HOG).

But in windows you have other programs in memory which you can't test ...
