Ps3 - New Versions Any Better?

I nabbed a PS3 in January of 2007 from a local Best Buy. I got it home and the thing locked up 3 times in less than 2 hours and it was sitting in an open shelf under my TV. Back then, the overheating problems were well documented. The system I had was insanely hot on the exhaust side.

 

Are the newer versions any better? I'm still considering getting one one of these days...

Would an X-Box 360 be the better option?

but my 40gb wont play ps2 games till mid summer apparently but i still love it

360 is the .!!!! if your into console gaming that is!. Xbox Live is full of payers who love to game. I still believe that xbox has the better online experience. With the new 360's the red ring of death is un heard of. Grab yourself a 360 you wont regret it!

I don't get a chance to play too often due to having a toddler running around... and I mean "Running"

 

I also don't play online, so that's not a selling point for me either. I've never had an X-Box or any other system since the first Playstation hit the shelves way back when. I was just hoping that they had figured out the locking up and overheating problems that seemed to plague that system. I don't play shooting games, because that's what my gaming PC is for. The only games I'd end up playing on the PS3 are Driving type games.

Get the 360, it has a better online community and more exclusives. If your like racing games, get Forza 2 for the 360. I never played it but Forza one was almost like playing Gran Turismo.

I never heard of PS3 having overheating issues. Even when it first came out. It does get hot by the vents, but wouldn't any other electronic. As Fireonice said, the newer 360 models almost eliminate ring of death and overheating. I bought one when Halo 3 (ugh played it for 2 weeks and stopped, wasn't impressed) came out and I have never gotten a ring of death. I bought a PS3 when MGS 4 came out, the greatest game ever made. I don't really replay singleplayer games, so this would probably be a rental. I still haven't tried Metal Gear Online yet, been busy with Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer.

 

I'm gonna tell you now, the only good games for the PS3 are the exclusives. Overall if you where to have both systems, such as myself. Usually always go with 360. It has more people online to play with, but that also means more 9-16 year olds with high voices talking smack to you over their mic. You don't get that trash talk on PS3, cause almost no one wants to spend $40-50 for a bluetooth headset. LOL

 

On another note, the PS3 does make an amazing media center. So can the 360, but the PS3 totally outshines the 360 in this catagory. I have 338 GB of media, that all work on my PS3. You can stream, or upload files to your PS3. If your a big movie buff, the PS3 would be a good choice. Blu-ray supports 1080p and up to 7.1 channels. PS3 can now output DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio from Blu-ray disc. Of course your going to need a reciever that has at least HDMI v 1.3 to output HD audio.

 

PS3 has its own web browser which is neat, but I usually only use it to transfer movies over http server. If your big with YouTube, its good for that. Some sites don't work for it yet, but I really haven't messed around with it. You can browse sites fairly easy with it. Typing is a bummer, but lucky the PS3 supports a wide range of usb, wireless, and bluetooth keyboards and mouses.

 

PS3's hard drive can be upgradable. I swapped out the 80 GB for a WD 400 GB AAKS 7200 RPM Sata II, which is faster than the 80 GB 5400 RPM. Through some benchmarks online it's about 15% faster. Not much, but a nice upgrade when your going for more space. Lets not forget you can grab an external enclosure and use that 80 GB as a backup. The PS3 supports up to Sata I, I believe but Sata II is backwards compat. It also only fits a laptop hard drive. Or you can be like me and grab a PC hard drive and an external enclosure for less than max capacity of laptop hard drives. Then run a female to male Sata cable into the PS3. I paid $88.98 for my setup, while a laptop 320 GB 5400 RPM Sata II can run about $130. That's the highest you can go with laptop hard drives for now.

 

If your really bored you can install Linux onto the PS3, such as Ubuntu, Yellow Dog Linux, Gentoo and etc. From what I heard, Ubuntu is easier to use than the others. Sadly, Sony has disabled the video accelerator so you can't use all the fancy eye candy special effects as you would with a PC with Ubuntu. You pretty much can do anything with it as with a PC with Linux. You just can't play PC games with it due to the graphics card being disabled.

AGREED! Apparently Sony is releasing an emulator like update so the 40GB PS3 can play PS2 games. I can't wait which is why I am keeping my 40GB PS3. Besides my PS2 is broken which is another reason that contributed to me getting a PS3 after I heard about the update coming out, and besides never mind that, PS3 GAMES ROCK! MGS4 all the way! :thumbs-up:

I'm a little more laid back when it comes to console gaming. If I want to watch movies, I don't mind spending the money for a dedicated DVD player. It's always going to be better and I still think no matter if it's BluRay or HD-DVD, it's still a minor distraction to get consumers to spend more money until the real replacement to DVD comes in. I have yet to watch a movie on my PS2 or XB360. If I want to play music - stereo, MP3 player, PC. If I want to surf the web... PC only please, and I rarely want to surb the web when I'm at home.

 

So my take is different ...not right, though I don't think wrong either - just different perspective. When I decide which console I want, it depends solely on what games are coming out for that console. And I use the same logic as when thinking to buy a CD or not ...is there just 1 or 2 hits I'm interested in or are there quite a few I'll love and a couple I won't mind?

 

If it's a question of hardware reliability, I'll wait. Only manufacturer I'd buy first off the line for is Nintendo stuff. Sure it may not be the best in power but it's always rock solid. Though I did wait on my Wii, not because I was worried on the hardware (aside from actually FINDING it) but because I was waiting on more game titles. I bought my XB360 late last year and so far I have yet to have any problems. It's loud as sin and it does get pretty darn hot but no issues. I've had that thing run for about 14hrs too because I accidently forgot to turn it off when i crashed out - it was definitely hot as hell when I woke up though. Tho on the flip, I had my Nintendo Wii on for over 24hrs and it was almost cold to the touch. I had to feel all around it to find a warm spot. (man that sounds dirty )

 

 

I'm not really all that concerned with the simulation type racing games as they get boring to me. I just like collecting all the cool @$$ cars and I usually get bored before I can so I don't know if the PS3 is better for racing games or if the XB360 is. I could be wrong but I DO think the XB360 has more racing games...

So you're pretty much looking at:

F1 vs Forza 2

Gran Turismo 5 vs Project Gotham Racing 4

 

 

Either way you're looking at a hefty investment, though much cheaper than a computer, so you gotta ask yourself if you love the PS3 enough to want a second copy of it. Bonus is you don't have to invest in any more software titles and/or controllers. Or do you want more versatility in gaming options? Granted most games cross platforms but there are still some heavy hitting titles that only 1 side gets. But again I focus solely on the game perspective, Krazyxazn brings up some good points on other benefits.

PS3 All the way, the xbox has similar games, but its reliablity is just poor. Im now waiting for my fith one now from ms! Should be able to get a PS3 in a few months though.

Reliability is no longer an issue with the newer 360 models. I bought mine when Halo 3 came out and played long hours 5+. I have never gotten a Ring of Death nor has my brother who now has the 360.

 

If your into racing get Forza 2, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue isn't worth the money. 60 cars and only 6 tracks. Not worth the $40 fee. Laggy multiplayer aswell. Wait till the full version is out then get Gran Turismo 5, Prologue just isn't enough to be consider worth $40.

i think you just had a bad PS3 because i have yet to hear of anyones PS3 failing unlike those 360s... (i have enough of them to climb a house with.)

No exaggerating.. The side of the PS3 I had, I could have fried an egg on. My TV Stand Console width is 24" wide, so there was plenty of room for this puppy to breath. When I took it out, I thought I had burned the inside wood of the Entertainment Stand. It was that hot.

 

The funny thing behind it was, I was looking for a Laptop at the time I spotted the PS3 in Best Buy. I saw the box and thought it was another one of those empties they usually have on the shelf to get you to go look. I picked it up and realized it was the real thing. Not something you usually found in the first month they came out. As I picked it up, a "vulture" started circling. A store employee came over and talked with me briefly about it and answered my questions. He told me that the problems that the PS3 had were just rumors and actually only 1 in 10 were coming back, and those problems were usually due to people not knowing how to set them up, and not actual problems with the machines. More on that later...

 

The vulture guy stood within 5-10 feet behind me and I knew he was there. I played like I was reconsidering and going to put it down and then he'd almost lunge at the shelf, but I'd hold onto it and he'd back off. I did this 3-4 times, but pretended I didn't see him there. I got a little worried when I saw the guy follow us up to the checkout and then it looked like he was also following us into the parkinglot. I wasn't too worried... (MN is a Conceal/Carry state) B:)

 

I got it home 8pm that night and had it back to Best Buy at 9am the next morning... The returns girl saw me coming and asked "Why is "This One" being returned?". I responded with the locking up 3 times in less than 2 hours story and she said "figures. She then proceeded to inform me that 3 out of every 5 they've sold within that last 2 weeks had been returned with similar issues. They had an entire 2 pallets in back that needed to be sent back to Sony... Also, there had been some patch or firmware problem in the first ones that when I had got mine, I was supposed to download the newer one from their website and install it and it was "supposed" to fix many bugs... That never happened due to it locking up on me...

 

That's basically why I asked if they had improved the design or electronics before I spent any money on a new one.
