Picking An Lcd Monitor For Photoshop & Gaming

Its time to buy a new monitor. I need one that has excellent color accuracy because I do a lot of photoshop, zbrush, 3d modeling etc work. I also need one that has a good response time for gaming. I want it to be 24" or larger.

 

I was planning on spending anywhere from $400-700.

 

Because of my requirements for multimedia work, this limits my options. Almost all TN displays are disqualified for this reason. I have read that IPS displays are the best for photoshop work/color accuracy. I know there are a few other types that i cant remember off the top of my head that sort of go in between these two types. The disadvantage to an IPS is the contrast ratio. You can only get about 800:1 in an IPS display which is acceptable but by no means grand.

 

So I was hoping to hear from some of you as to your opinions on a display that would suit my needs.

 

I would like to get by spending less then $700 but I have found 1 display that sounds pretty solid, but at the high end of my price range. The 26" DoubleSight DS-263N

 

At the lower end of my price range i have found this NEC 24" LCD24WMCX

But i cant seem to find any solid reviews on the NEC monitor. Some reviews for it show different specs then whats listed on NECs website and neweggs.

 

So please if you have any suggestions, I am all ears. Thanks.

I wouldn't go for more than 24", at least while the resolution remains at 1900x1200.

 

NEC do make some good displays, but if you can't find decent reviews for that particular display it does make things a bit more difficult.

 

The BenQ FP241W does come to mind.

I'm not sure if anything better has been released since then that would fit into your price bracket, as that is over a year old now.

Plus newegg don't sell it if you are intent on buying from them.

While Samsung do make decent LCDs, that particular model is a TN panel.

Hardware calibration tools are pretty much essential for getting the most out a monitor, this is true.

I have never been able to justify sinking the money into something like that myself and unless you've got the money to spare it probably isn't necessary unless it's important for your job that colour accuracy is spot on.

Split it with friends. You should use it every now and then, anyway.

i say get a viewsonic. theres a reason why its the industry standard for graphical work. i love my 19' WS viewsonic, even with the value series you can vivid colors but if you have some extra money make sure for one, always use DVI and two pick the VG series, it looks so nice.

 

when you do photoshop work you really don't want that tint of yellow that most LCDs have.
