As someone that does Law Enforcement and also is a Firefighter street racing is illegal and just plain stupid. I don't care if nobody is on the highway it does not make it right. How do you there wouldn't be somebody walking down the highway or crossing the highway because their vehicle breaks down???? Doing 90mph you are going to have some trouble stopping for anything there is no question about it and in cold weather to boot. <_> There are racetracks for a reason and this is one of them. You cannot forsee the future so doing 90mph for even a few seconds might be a sec to late. You may have got away with it this time, but I guarantee one day you will be unlucky its only a matter of time. Now don't get me started about Police Officers driving that has nothing to do with Street Racing and I would be very offended if you compared it to that. Like Red said we have to go through hundreds of hours of driver training and we have to requalify every year. There is a time and place for everything but fast cars should stay on the track, my mustang is so fast, quick, and light its scary but its called being mature. Byron Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 The funny thing is that on the stretch of interstate that I ride (i-65), The speed limit is 70, and if your going that speed you are basically asking to be rear ended. I usually cruise around 85 in the right hand lane and then passing in the left when I come up on a truck. Now would you call that stupid? Just about everything bigred said still would apply to me going over the speed limit, but in my case theres more cars around, more possiblitiy of stalled cars on the side, and just as many deer or tires or whatever that might be on the road. I do think its pretty retarded to street race, and I have many people challenge me bc my car has a full exhaust and 18's and looks "fast" but my car is by no means fast so I find it pretty retarded to pursue a race......That is kind of off the point, what i wanted to really say is that this is an arguement that will never end. Or the fact that the Mustang cobra carries 390 HP and 390 ft lb or torque. And that for about $50 you can do a blower pulley swap and turn it into a 450HP monster. That'll spank ANYTHING you can throw at it for the same $$$ or even more. Yeah GTOs have a lot of HP but they're still Pontiacs. (The Pontiac Firehawk demamded respect) 594981[/snapback] are you putting a base charger against a mustang GT? now i'm a ford guy, but I know dang well what a pile of crap the new mustang IS. best friend was on the engineering team. he admits there were so many comprmises to get the thing out on time, and power was one of them. sure you can put a bunch of power out of the block, but will it make it to the road? NO. besides the SRT8 charger with the 6.1L V8 is putting down 420hp to all 4 wheels stock. heck even teh RT puts down 340hp stock. plus that power is getting to the ground. so don't go talking about a high end vs a mid range engine config on a car... you know as well as I do that it's not a good match. the GTO is the one I say is the weakest... looks like an overgrown G6. now back to the racing thing, thanks bosco for someone else being mature enough to look at the "what if" aspect of this. byron, there are interstate highways designed for higher speeds. wider curves, wide shoulders, wider lanes... plus they're all chosen by location to cut down on things like deer running across the road (18' high embankment walls and such). I know of stretches of i75 that are 85mph as the speed limit. but this was all engineered for that type of driving. they also have signs that are not static as far as the speed. a computer program will adjust the signs depending on driving conditions... one of which would be the temps of the pavement. So I'd call it very similar to the "highway" he was talking about. The only other non "interstate" high ways around here are rarely 4 lanes and dont have exits like he described, its more of stops. I also know that it can tear up property really fast. and the places we can do it are disapearing at an alarming rate. hence the reason I'm actually in the process of building an entire park / vacation destination for offroaders and the out door type in georgia. we now have over 50 miles of trails winding thru the property to provide a legal place to go wheeling, where safety is paramount.
