Just a FYI, according to current AMD Roadmaps DDR2 wont last very long on the K8 memory controller (in contrast to how long the Socket 940 opterons have been around). That means that future DDR3+ memory controllers might require a new socket, we will have to wait and see.

finally! i been waiting for some pictures. that is what iv been holding out for so long. the second it hits stores i got it...i hope they drop ddr2 by than i rather just go with ddr3 b/c i know their going to at some point and i would hate to hold out even longer.

Actually, we'll probably get the DDR3 version. Remember socket 940? When that came out, the consumer socket was 754. Then we got socket 939 that didn't need ECC memory and supported dual-channel. Something like this could happen. We could get a socket with 1206 pins a few months after the 1207 pin socket comes out. Hey, the 1206 might be socket M2, who knows?

I probably not, as everythign I've seen leads me to believe DDR2 and DDR3 are pin compatable. You might need a new cpu for DDR3 (when moving from ddr2) but I really doubt you will need a new motherboard.

 

I'm pretty sure M2 is supposed to be 940 pins. Socket F seems like it would need extra for the additional hypertransport links.

I've definitely heard that M2 was going to be 1200+ pins. If they're moving to DDR2 or DDR3, then they definitely need more pins, not just one more. Plus, making it socket 940 would just be too confusing. Kind of like Intel's 478 and 479 thing.

I'm tending to agree. besides, does anyone know the EXACT number of pins on a 939 processor that are key pins... aka not needed? I know it's close to 100 of them. slightly less on the 940 opterons and old FX's and close to 100 of the pins on the 754's are unused. the 478 p4's are someting like 120 unused pins, and the 775's have 1/3 of thier contact points / brushes that are redundant (aka more than one contact point for for the same job in case of a crappy connection).

 

I also don't think that AMD is going to use an LGA socket for their next chip. I think they've seen how many issues intel is having with it... issues best left to intel (who btw is moving AWAY from LGA already).

I don't see intel moving away from the LGA socket. Their main market is in processors right? So wouldn't they prefer to have the motherboard break rather than the processor? Plus, is many cases the motherboard is cheaper than the CPU.
