legend_jo Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 This has been an on going problem for me. I used to be able to share files without a hitch on my two PCs using my Linksys(BEFSR41v2). They both have zonealarm(standard free edition) and both can see each other within their "zones" tab . They both have access to the internet. both can ping each other, and see each other in MyNetworkPlaces. But when i try to access files that have been set to be shared i get "\\*PC name* is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to findout if you have access permissioons. Access denied. " I have changed the security in the shared files to allow everyone full access, and was able to map a network drive. Both gave me no success. i have disabled both Firewalls no success. I did find a workaround. I created a user profile with the same user name/Password on both. This let me access files on each computer, but only with this user name/password. The other previous user accounts still cannot access. I'M LOST HERE ARE THE IPCONFIGS OF BOTH: 1st PC Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : MAIN Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-09-61-09-09 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.238.96.12 68.238.112.12 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, September 06, 2005 5:41:12 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, September 07, 2005 5:41:1 2nd PC Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : LIVINGROOM Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Linksys NC100 Fast Ethernet Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0C-41-22-F4-CE Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.104 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.238.96.12 68.238.112.12 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, September 06, 2005 8:39:45 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, September 07, 2005 8:39:4 5 PM any help/ideas appreciated
LobbDogg Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 create the user on the computer you want to connect to. then on the other PC try and access it, it will hopefully prompt you for a password.

LobbDogg Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 (edited) same results...access denied. Simple file sharing has been disabled on both already. i'm not running an FTP server, so it won't ask for PW. I"m sharing files between my two PC's only, or trying to. 541260 Even if you aren't running an FTP server, sometimes it may ask for a password if there isn't the guest account open. Check this out, it may help, not sure though EDIT* I see Asus posted just before me, and yes I agree....Try going to Start->Run and type in \\IP address of PC Sometimes My Network Places is gay and doesn't allow for a direct connection to another PC, seen it lots of times. So what I do is create a shortcut using that line and I can always share back and forth, I've never run into a problem since using that method. cybergrunt69 Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Did you do "\\ip192.168.1.103" or "\\192.168.1.103" Also, you don't have a .103 - your machines are .100 and .104 You shouldn't need the guest account, that can be left disabled. The easiest way to do it is to logon to each machine with the same username and password, and you might want to make sure that they're both a member of the same workgroup. LobbDogg Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 You sure didn't do it right \\192.168.1.103 this is how you want to do it
legend_jo Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 (edited) Okay got it. Yeah the ip address changed. It does that. the Main is now 192.168.1.103, not .100. Livingroom is still 192.168.1.104 I was able to bring up my shared resources the current machine, but not the shared resources on the other machine. I get same error: \\192.168.1.104 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource... work group for both is TEAM Edited September 7, 2005 by legend_jo
LobbDogg Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 (edited) work group for both is TEAM 541294 Setting the workgroup is not essential, it only really matters when using My Network Places as it groups machines together. As long as they are on the same subnet you should be able to access it, even if it is in another workgroup by accessing it directly by IP or PC name To me it almost sounds like a firewall could be blocking it. you said you have zonealarm on them, double check the settings to make sure its not blocking the other machine from accessing the shares. legend_jo Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 Disabled all firewalls, Zonealarm and WxP Firewall. Same result... It doesn't make sense to me, they can see eachother, or ping each other just not share what is supposed to be shared. They see eachother through Zonealarm just fine too, each is in eachothers trusted zone, and used to work fine this way too.
