GPU Usage 60-80% Help!

Hello guys.

I have huge issue with a GPU power usage for games.. it runs around 60%-85% max but more around 70% stable.( games like The Division 2 beta ( ye i know its not optimized yet its just a beta) AC Odyssey,

Black ops 4 but mostly in blackout mode.I dont know is it some kind of problem with open areas in games or what.. once the gpu usage drops my fps drops aswell no matter what Graphic settings i use.

Black ops is installed on SSD)

Noticed that i have 99% of GPU usage only in Lobby at all those games and fps push up to 200fps depends on settings (i know you can't measure by the lobby)

My rig:

Ryzen 5 2600 (waiting for 3000 series to come out)

RTX 2080 MSI Duke OC

Ram Corsair lpx 2666mhz 8gb x 2 Dual channel

Mobo Gigabyte Aorus x470 ultra gaming.

PSU Be quiet 650W 80 bronze+ (just to mentione PSU is about 6 years old)

SSD 240gb Adata

1tb HDD

I'm having no CPU bottleneck cuz cpu never goes above 80% of usage even single core never hit max 90% while monitoring

Tried so far:

CPU Stock and OC 4.0Ghz same thing voltage temp everything is stable.

Tryed to turn off XMP. Ram drops to  2133MHz tryed on 2666 and 2933Mhz same thing no changes.

Swapping ram on different positions( it works in dual channel not single one)

DDU Drivers

BIOS Update

Fresh windows installation

HPET Turned off and on at device manager

Nvidia power settings maximum performance

Same as windows power settings to max

Latest Drivers of all

Latest windows update.

System temperatures are all fine. GPU never goes above 70C* even if it hits 99% gpu usage in a lobby. CPU is at 60C* under the load.

If someone could help I would appreciate it.

So zela123, hey howzit goin... i don't have a definitive answer for your query about your gpu power usage, but I can't help but notice that the card you have is a beast, and very capable of top max frame rates, right up there with the MSI RTX 2080ti ... I also noticed that the PSU listed for your gamer is slightly less than the test gamer rigs I saw in various gamer blog vids, and comparisons from the gamer community. Now I'm no expert, and I'm not saying that PSU is causing the high power draw while in game, but the rigs from the videos i watched were running 1000-1500 watt gold and platinum PSU's which definitely could provide the card with plenty of power to run at OC and max settings in game....

It just might be that that high end GPU you have there is designed to run at that draw under those high performance conditions, and not the PSU's fault at all, but this is where I start to get lost, and hope some of my colleagues here at OCC will know how best to direct you... best wishes and good luck with your monster beast MSI card !!

CJloki I am wondering what the 12v rail is doing under gaming loads. According to Ccokemans testing for the GPU - If I am looking at the charts correctly shows the 2080 drawing 387 watts load while overclocked and the TI drawing 442 watts overclocked.

However 80-90% load in games does seem a little extreme.

Back to basics @op

Have you attempted to clean out and install the latest drivers?? Install DDU or display drivers uninstaller then install a clean version of the Latest GPU driver.

Does MSI afterburner show what happens when the GPU falls off? Such as if your CPU usage roof tops and your GPU bogs.

I will note that with my I7 3930K (about 10-15% slower then your proc) will not get enough data to the GPU during Ray tracing tests like Port royal. Are you sure its not CPU or HDD related?

Well I think the best thing is to establish if your video card is running properly. If you can run 3Dmark TimeSpy, Heaven or Superposition Benchmark and look at the GPU score (ignore the CPU). If its within range of other peoples than it will be either related to that game or something else in the system. Next would be to uninstall the drivers using DDU and than doing a clean fresh install of the newest NVIDIA drivers.

I'll post my scores in a second.

Edit: I did some digging and found the MSI Duke OC is luckily an A-Variant GPU. The downside is MSI has decided to leave a low Power Target Limit of 256Watts. This compares to the NVIDIA Founders Edition of 280 and the Gigabyte Gaming OC 300Watts. So its kinda low. Only way around this is to flash the BIOS to a different model card. Not the best idea honestly. That wouldn't explain the lack of 100% usage, only lower overall FPS.

In any case Boinker I think ccokemans charts refer to total system draw because the RTX 2080 Overclocked tops out at 280-300watts (model depending). The 2080 Ti is anywhere from 280 Watt to 450 Watt. Most cards are within the 330 range.

Here are results so far:

Timespy Extreme (Stock Settings) 1905Mhz~ Core
Graphics Score 5039

Timespy Extreme (OC) 2050Mhz~ Core +600 Memory
Graphics Score 5469

FireStrike Ultra 1.1 (OC) 2070mhz~ Core +600 Memory
Graphics Score 6686

IR_cow...

Figures I would mention Cokemans review and do it wrong.

Its all good. Every review site does it differently. It trips me up also. I just happen to know what these cards draw on load

I have heard repeatedly, from several sources "RTX 2080 is in it's infancy and as yet has not lived up to it's potential" ...thus, intuitively speaking, the current drivers are in their infancy too, and could very well be the root of the problem... or so it seems.... I can't help but think that as my friends have said, a clean install of the latest drivers certainly can't hurt. This is going to get sorted out in time...

...that and a newer, more potent PSU, to be on the safe side !

Hello I was having this same problem a week ago I'll list here what you can do to fix this problem.

1- Reinstall an older NVIDIA driver or update them

2-In the control panel of NVIDIA place in preference for maximum performance in Energy

3-Update your BIOS

4-Turn off vsync

5-Update the BIOS

6- In the BIOS, disable a thing called "High Precision Timer"

7- And now what will probably work is to format Windows

8-If all these attempts do not work try starting your pc in dual channel this worked for me.

Don't do any of those 8 things.  Edit:  7 things, he listed 1 twice. haha.  I also wonder why he tells you to go through those first 7 steps first, and then on the 8th step, tells you what worked for him.  We need some kind of simple test here to prove you are human in order to join the site.
