ASUS GTX 770 and PCI Express 3.0

That is the motherboard I have.  It is PCI Express 3.0 capable but GPU Info shows my video card running as 2.0.   The NVidia driver control panel also shows it running in 2.0 mode.

I can't find any reference in the BIOS that sets the PCI-E slot as 2 or 3.  Does it auto change when I start a game up since the bandwidth isn't needed when I'm not playing a game?

I do plan on getting an i7 4770k and this motherboard soon so its not that big of an issue but I'm curious why it shows as that anyways.  When I put the video card in this weekend I did do a wipe of the old drivers and installed the new drivers.

Is it something I even need to worry about?

Oh, thank you!  That I did not know.  Odd that the motherboard and cpu are in the same generation and it doesn't support it.  Glad I'll be getting a new CPU/Motherboard soon.

You don't need a new mb, just a ivy bridge or newer cpu, it's not the mb it's the cpu that won't support it. However if you upgrade to the 4770 you will need the new mb to support that cpu.
