Intel Core i7 920 C0/C1 Stepping + Gigabyte G1.Guerrilla LGA1366

Well, I stepped into a pile with this one. This being my first intel overclock build, I'm having some issues overclocking.

 

First, the setup:

 

Intel Core i7 920 Bloomfield

Gigabyte G1.Guerrilla X58 (LGA 1366)

8GB GSkill Sniper DDR3 1600 (2x4... upgrading to 6GB *3x2*Tri-Channel later)

1x Radeon HD5830 1GB

Thermaltake ToughPower TR2 750W PSU

Seagate 160GB SATAIII 7200RPM (HDD, not SSD :dunno: )

InWin Dragonrider Full-Tower Chassis

Xigmatek Dark Knight-S1283W CPU Cooler (aftermarket BEAST pwm fan moving 180cfm max, brand unknown :doh: )

 

 

Right now, I have it stable at 3GHz... but anything higher than that, causes boot failure.

 

I have disabled all the energy efficient goodies from bios, checked, double-checked, and triple checked my ram speed/pcie clock/voltage/etc... tried for 3.2GHz... boot fail.

 

I honestly do not understand... but I guess from what I read on the C0/C1 stepping... is that it is a NIGHTMARE to overclock...

 

Has anyone successfully hit 3.8GHz plus on this i7 920?

 

Oh... and the voltage I left stock for the 3.0GHz OC... because every time I touch voltage... it derps on me... so far it's stable... I'm somewhat happy... but yearn for more.

Your RAM will run at a multiple of the CPU clock, right now 140 x 12 (2:12) = 1680. Lower that ratio to underclock the memory while overclocking the CPU to take it out of the equation.

 

Thanks. I knew that much. I figured it out. This baby needed a LOT more juice (voltage) than I thought it would. Running stable at 3.8GHz (1.5V). Passed Intel Burn test with flying colors going no higher than 90°C.

 

I might try for a higher speed later for s&g's, but it's moving pretty slick right now as it is.

To get the 200 or better base clock you may need to go down to the 19 multiplier. the 19 is usually the most stable if not its 21. Typically both of mine ran well at 21 but would not run a multi of 20. Being a CO-C1 stepping I7 920 you will likely need to get more cooling so you can put some more voltage to the chip. The Co's sometimes just would not overclock without excessive Qpi and Vcore so get some better cooling and get 4.20Ghz down. :D

 

And also move the Memory chips to the 2gig chips if you can find them. They tended to allow the system to overclock a little easier then the 4gig chips.

Bringing it back from the dead.

 

Same system, few changes.

 

Changes:

 

1. Corsair H70 dual fan

2. Agility 3 SSD

3. Radeon 7870 2GB

 

CAN HOLD STABLE AT 4.2GHz with HT disabled! 1.45625vcoe (bios)

 

Right now, shooting for 4.3GHz. Will pass 8/10 burn-in tests before crashing (59 GFlops)

 

Performs MUCH better with HT disabled in benchmarks @4.2.

 

Problem I'm running into at 4.3 is QPI voltage and vcore voltage. It freezes at test 8.

 

Suggestions?
