Pec0 Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 http://www.ebay.com/sch/CPUs-Processors-/164/i.html?_nkw=775+quad There's lots of deals to be had. With your RAM it shouldn't be too hard to push the FSB to get some high clocks out of them either. What would you suggest be the smallest quad I could go for? Q8000 series or Q9000 series? Waco Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 I loved my Q6600...I know next to nothing about the newer ones except that they need higher FSB increases to be overclocked (since they start out at a higher speed).

C2Qs still are waaaay offf their rocker in pricing, I can't go along with any recommendation on the most over priced socket on the market

Looks like I could get a second hand one for around £100 = $154.9. No idea if it's a good CPU or worth the money.

It would be a good CPU but not for the money they charge for them, where did you find it for that price?

IVIYTH0S Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 When I posted it there were a bunch of auctions in the sub-$50 range. With how many years left on the auction I see $89 for a Q8200 in buy it now :barf: http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-SLB5M-CORE-2-QUAD-Q8200-2-333GHZ-4-1333-LGA-775-/251080625277?pt=CPUs&hash=item3a75924c7d and $118 for a Q9450 for the next ending auction, which may rise more. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Q9450-2-66GHz-12M-1333-Socket-775-CPU-LGA775-Processor-SLAWR-/180900074301?pt=CPUs&hash=item2a1e7c133d I am going to watch the Q6600 currently at $73 and see how high it goes... I really don't understand why these are still selling so high

RedFury77 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 (edited) A fellow OCC member has a Q6600 for sale, and he is in Manchester: http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=191151 Looks like he has had them for a while so maybe a good deal can be had. I couldn't justify going for the Q8 or 9000s thought, they are SO expensive! You can get a new sandy bridge for nearly the same price. I'd go with a budget quad-core here to hold you over for another year or two OR go all out pick up an i5-2500k/3570k and new mobo for about $350. If you can find something better than the Q6600 for the same price, then go for it, but it looks to me that the Q6600 is the bang for buck option here. Cheap auctions ending soon: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Q6600-2-4-GHz-Quad-Core-HH80562PH0568M-Processor-/230805462276?pt=UK_Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item35bd13dd04#ht_500wt_1413 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Core-Q6600-Processor-2-4ghz-8m-1066-05A-/160818202095?pt=UK_Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item25718305ef#ht_593wt_1396 Edited June 12, 2012 by RedFury77

RedFury77 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Hey I'm no pro tech guy, and can't make any promises. I can tell you about my own experience when I changed from my 2 core cpu to a 4 core cpu though. In my case it was an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ BE, OC'd to 3.2Ghz that I swapped out for my Phenom II x4 940 at a stock 3.0Ghz. There was an immediate boost in performance to everything, higher fps in games, faster switching in multitasking, it just ran everything better. I now have it OC'd up to 3.6Ghz, and would not want to ever go back, in fact I would like to get a phenom x6, but the price premium is too high and in a similar way to your situation, I would rather just go for a new intel sandy/ivy setup instead. But this setup is kicking really good as-is and I think I can hold off the upgrade itch for another year or two. The only thing I would think the Q6600 would under-perform is in a single-thread application that only relies on the speed of a single core, then the fastest cpu core wins. I can't think of anything, definitely no games, that are like that. Another thing, if you don't like it or see an improvement, resell it on ebay for the same price. You might lose a couple bucks but that's it. And if you like it, sell the duo cpu and get some money back.

Well that's a switch in generations not just core count that made the big boost in performance for you. The Q6600 is actually a step back a generation in Core 2's but it's not as big of a difference as the one you made, it will just equate to lesser overclocking ability and more heat production (then a newer quad since quads will always make more heat then dual cores) OP can you afford to change platforms to something newer with the sale of your CPU, Motherboard and RAM??
