There's lots of deals to be had. With your RAM it shouldn't be too hard to push the FSB to get some high clocks out of them either.

 

What would you suggest be the smallest quad I could go for? Q8000 series or Q9000 series?

I loved my Q6600...I know next to nothing about the newer ones except that they need higher FSB increases to be overclocked (since they start out at a higher speed).

Was thinking about the Q9550 too. Looks like I could get a second hand one for around £100 = $154.9. No idea if it's a good CPU or worth the money.

I couldn't justify going for the Q8 or 9000s thought, they are SO expensive! You can get a new sandy bridge for nearly the same price. I'd go with a budget quad-core here to hold you over for another year or two OR go all out pick up an i5-2500k/3570k and new mobo for about $350.

 

If you can find something better than the Q6600 for the same price, then go for it, but it looks to me that the Q6600 is the bang for buck option here.

Ok cool, and the 2.4 Ghz Q6600 is definitely going to out perform my 3.16 Ghz E8500?

Hey I'm no pro tech guy, and can't make any promises. I can tell you about my own experience when I changed from my 2 core cpu to a 4 core cpu though. In my case it was an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ BE, OC'd to 3.2Ghz that I swapped out for my Phenom II x4 940 at a stock 3.0Ghz. There was an immediate boost in performance to everything, higher fps in games, faster switching in multitasking, it just ran everything better. I now have it OC'd up to 3.6Ghz, and would not want to ever go back, in fact I would like to get a phenom x6, but the price premium is too high and in a similar way to your situation, I would rather just go for a new intel sandy/ivy setup instead. But this setup is kicking really good as-is and I think I can hold off the upgrade itch for another year or two.

 

The only thing I would think the Q6600 would under-perform is in a single-thread application that only relies on the speed of a single core, then the fastest cpu core wins. I can't think of anything, definitely no games, that are like that.

 

Another thing, if you don't like it or see an improvement, resell it on ebay for the same price. You might lose a couple bucks but that's it. And if you like it, sell the duo cpu and get some money back.

Well that's a switch in generations not just core count that made the big boost in performance for you.

 

The Q6600 is actually a step back a generation in Core 2's but it's not as big of a difference as the one you made, it will just equate to lesser overclocking ability and more heat production (then a newer quad since quads will always make more heat then dual cores)

 

OP can you afford to change platforms to something newer with the sale of your CPU, Motherboard and RAM??
