sticknstone Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 The case I am working on now for an Athlon XP system places the PSU farther than normally from the MOBO, so extending the 20 pin/4 pin cables by one foot was needed. The purpose of the tape jacket is to give the 20 wires a slim size, and reducing obstructions in the case air flow. I used color coded wire tape on the tape jacket, but there are no windows on the case. This mod will void the PSU warranty. Parts 18 AWG primary wire rosin core solder flux heat shrink tubing heat gun professional 150w solder gun (the 30w solder stick did nothing to the lump of solder for the rails on the back of the PCB) color coded wire tape wire strippers Installation Cut the wire into 24 one foot length pieces. Strip the wire ends. Cut the heat shrink tubing into 24 one inch pieces. Unsolder the wire to be extended from the pcb. Put one heat shrink tube piece on wire. Apply flux to one end of the one foot length wire piece, and solder to the pcb. Solder splice the other end of the one foot length wire to the end of the wire which is being extended. Clean up the flux residue at the splice. Put the heat shrink tube piece over the splice, and apply heat with the heat gun till the tubing shrinks around the splice. Repeat for remaining wires to be extended. Wrap the tape snuggly around the group of wires. The finished result appears bumpy. The group of wires are not smooth as a usb wire is, or the power cable. The bumps occur where the wires twist and at the splice. The hairs nest of wires has definitely been reduced. It appears as if the pc had a hair cut. The wire group is small and neat. Another option to tape is heat shrink tubing the whole length and avoiding the lines of tape spiraling around the wire group. Morris Valer Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Very nice pictures, the wires looks so neat and organized. Good job on using heat shrink tubing for keeping the cables tied up. Also it will keep them from getting exposed.
VaporX Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 You know a simple 24 pin extender would have wored nicely :-)
bigball1 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 You know a simple 24 pin extender would have wored nicely :-) Sure but then it wouldn't have been modded with such nice colours
