Need help overclocking i7 950 to 4.2ghz

Hey guys I just got a corsair water cooler, and I've been having trouble getting the right settings to push my i7 950 to 4.2ghz. I've either gotten blue screens, or the temperatures would be too high. I'm sure I'm not imputing the right settings in my motherboard. Please help.

 

Current setup is this.

 

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz

ASUS Rampage III Formula LGA

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

CORSAIR CWCH50-1 water cooler for CPU (38*C stock temp) idle

CORSAIR 750W power supply

The h50 is probably holding You back. What's your load temperature under prime 95 @ stock settings. To get to 4.20 ghz or better you are going to have to fight the heat. If you cannot keep the temps under load below 70 then you are likely not going to make it.

 

What I would do is move the system up to 3.3 ghz and stability test it and see what happens. Just make sure the temperature doesnt get out of hand.

Maybe... I've run my chip at 85C max load though and no bluescreens. It's likely just inadequate voltage

 

OP, can you specify the "high" load temps you're receiving? By the way, Welcome to OCC!

I was getting like around 83*C. But prime95 fails, or it blue screens. I tried just 4.ghz with lower voltages, and the temps are just or below 70*c, But prime95 fails... I can't get the settings right... Anyone have the same motherboard? And thank you!

have you been lowerin the memory divider and can you list all the voltages you're using??

With these settings, running prime95 temps hit 80, after about 6 minutes the tests or workers start failing.

droid you will never be able to get there with 1.25V to the CPU! 4.2GHz is an aggresive overclock with the H50. Are you using 2 fans in push/pull configuration? I would bump your CPU voltage to 1.4V and try, if you don't get any errors, then try it @ 1.375V, if you do get errors try 1.425GHz. I would not go over 1.45V though, without better cooling at least

First of all the to get there you have to resort to tweaking many of the settings in the BIOS. Specifically your ram and uncore clock speeds, the voltages and sub timing for the memory, the voltage and LLC for the CPU. On my best 920 I can get just about 4.3GHz stable on that board but it does take some voltage to do it. That equates to heat and the H50 while good for low and some mid range clocks just cant effectively dissipate the thermal load of an i7 when it is cranked up.

 

I would start with the memory running at a divider that keeps the speed just below 1600MHz to start(regardless of the rated speed), Set the un core clock to exactly double the dram speed.

Set the PCIe clock to 103.

QPI link rate to the lowest selection

 

Next three leave on auto

 

Extreme engine Digi settings

 

Leave everything as it is in your screen shot except LLC to enabled or the next to highest value

 

CPU voltage, This is going to take what it takes and every chip is different 1.325 would be a good start after you get the cooling in check.

QPI/Dram to 1.30 or due to the 12gb

DRAM voltage is fine

Put your memory timing to auto to start then you can change them to the rated timings and see where it takes you.

 

Find some stability then start moving the speeds up.

1.35 or so will do it on the Vcore with the 950....... I have a 930 running 4.3GHz with 1.375 and the 950 uses less voltage.Stable 100 passes on LinX 25,000 problems.....

Do not exceed 1.65 on Memory voltage. Put QPI on auto. If your temps are hot you need to reset your H50. You will never get there with 1.24V. Set everything to default and run prime95 for an hour and get the max temps posted. you need to start from there.

motherboards do not make a ton of difference with voltages on these Bloomfields.

 

Disable turbo and C1E if you have it. I see you have turbo disabled. You cannot get there in 1 step. Keep multi at 21 or 23 and slowly raise the Bclck and run 15 min prime 95 each time until it crashes. Start at 3GHz and up it 5 on the bclock each run. Record temps and post them. Once you fail, raise vcore and rerun.
