How to explain basic computer components

Here is what I do in order and normally what I say when someone asks me about a PC problem

1.Try to avoid talking about it.

2.The screen/monitor is not the computer

3.A HDD is the place where windows is

4.More Ram is better

5.Don't know anything about your PC? Does it work? Your fine!

If you answered no to 5

6. Go buy a new PC at best buy

Here is how I compare

CPU=Brain

RAM=is the Brains workspace

GPU=without this you can't play games(you don't have one of these)

HDD=Stores you files

PSU=Gives power to everything in you PC

Case=That dusty box thing on your floor

DVD Drive=what you put CDs into

Fan=why your PC is loud

Motherboard=what everything mentioned above attaches to

I tend to describe the CPU as a freeway-- the GHz is the speed limit, and the number of cores is akin to the number of lanes in the freeway. Old timers seem to understand this much better than saying "a multi-core CPU will divide the tasks between each core and...."

Everything else I describe as a tiered information gathering system. Windows tells CPU to grab a file. CPU looks for file in cache. If said file is not in cache, the CPU looks in RAM. If it's not in RAM, then the CPU looks in the HDD.

And as everyone else said, the MB is what everything plugs into...my girlfriend surprised me one day when she said "I think our motherboard is going bad." I asked her why she knew and she said "well that's what everything attaches to" haha

CPU=Brain

RAM=Short-tem memory

GPU=Imagination

HDD=Long-term memory

PSU=Stomach

Case=Body

DVD Drive=Frisbee eater... nobody uses CD's/DVD's anymore.

Fan=Similar to that noisy blowhole you call your mouth

Motherboard=Head

This is typically how i explain computers to people.

That or i got with the car analogies...

CPU=Engine, easy related between 4 cyl, v6, v8... more cyl's more power... more cores, more power.

RAM=Transmission(Makes sense when you really think about it)

GPU=Turbo/Super charger

HDD=Trunk

PSU=Alternator

Case= Chassis

DVD Drive=Gas cap

Fan=Radiator

Motherboard=Frame

But what if the Desk 'top' space is bigger than the small drawers? I say its like a door... and a window :lol:

BTW why would you want to explain it to a dude who is computer illiterate? Sounds a bit nerdy?

Black why would the guy go back to 5 if its not working?

I get asked questions all the time on another forum that i'm a part of, so I was going to make a "Computer Hardware Guide" for the basics of hardware. I have since learned what ungrateful little pricks they are, so I've abandoned my efforts and become a very bitter poster there. :(

Oh goody :) At least you have a good aim... you belonged to another hardware forum :O OCC is all you need :)

No reason to use analogies and stuff just tell em what the stuff is for?

Yeah, but they also match prices. :P Find it cheaper on newegg, go to best buy, show them the website, and then enjoy the discount!

Fan=why your PC is loud

Someone might read this and remove all their fans :D

These fans on my video card are loud, let me remove them. Next day, my computer imploded thanks for the tips.

It's actually not a hardware forum at all lol. It's the MLG forums, and I mostly hang out with the few, the proud: The geeks in the Technology Discussion section. I wanted to use analogies to help them understand what I'm talking about. Here's an actual quote that I got today, which will demonstrate what I'm dealing with:

and i have an amazing video card but it seems to be too much for my motherboard its a radeon HD 5770 and i had to buy an extractor and a GPU fan but i have no extra fan power slots what do i dooo!?!

I've also had more than my fair share of criticism about my suggestions to people there. The general population of that community is based on 14 year old kids with anger issues, or so it seems. The community as a whole is immature, and has the attention span of a flea.
