SLI 2x GTX 460 - Power Requirements ?

Recommended Posts

This is my build, (below) . I added a second GeForce GTX 460 and it came up just fine, in SLI but when I ran the 3DMark11 basic benchmarks I heard the GPU fans spin up big time, GPUz showed them moving up to 50-55C and halfway through the test the system shut down/rebooted. I also had them right next to each other so I was wondering if there was not enough space to have them breath and is the HX650 is not enough PSU for this configuration. I had a separate issue with the second ZOTAC so I had to return it for a replacement. I hope to have the replacement next week, but am afraid the same thing will occur. I should be able to run 3DMark11 without the system going into reboot. It runs just fine on the original board and does not reboot.

You at least need a 750 to run SLI with those cards. Yea your psu has 4 pci-e power adapters and can run SLI but not with anything bigger then maybe a 260ish

Yup, the only way you'll be able to run SLI is if you underclock....well...everything. XD

Thanks. That is what I was thinking. I found a discount on a CORSAIR 1000W unit. So I expect I should be safe for a while with that. Looks like a good deal for an HX650 going on Ebay.

Thanks for you help.

FYI, here's what I'm drawing with my system at full load - Prime 95 and Furmark at the same time

(I have the Corsair AX 1200):

i7 950 @ 4.37GHz with 1.3875Vcore

Stock GTX 460 1GB's in SLI at 725MHz Core Clock at 1050mV: 679W

Overclocked GTX 460 1GB's in SLI at 960MHz Core Clock at 1212mV: 865W

A 650W should be plenty if everything's at stock and it may even handle a moderate OC. Have a look at some GTX 460 SLI reviews and power consumption figures, 400W (about 340W DC from the power supply) from the wall running Crysis for example.

I'm folding on two GTX 460's and only pulling 250~270W from the wall, not a high gaming load I know but folding is pretty demanding.

I did go to a Power Supply calculator, from NEW EGG I think and it said given my base config, that I needed at least a 768W PSU. But just as El_Capitan has I have 2 that are Overclocked ZOTAC Amped Editions. I bet that is what cause a problem w few weeks ago when I had Cross Fire 5770's and the system started running unstable. I thought of everything else except the draw of the GPU's. I since moved the 5770's to a different system and have this one with the 460's but way under powered PSU.

Thanks again.

What power supply are you using?

I'll presume 80% efficiency and that 679W is from the wall, so that's 543W from the power supply.

I'm surprised by such a large increase in power consumption when overclocking the GTX 460's, that's nearly 253W against a stock rating of approximately 160W for a single card.

It says in the post, lol, the Corsair AX 1200 Gold.

I know, I was just as surprised, the GTX 460 1GB's overclocked to the max (1212mV's) are quite power hungry.

At system idle:

Stock GTX 460 1GB's in SLI at 725MHz Core Clock at 1050mV: 243W

Overclocked GTX 460 1GB's in SLI at 960MHz Core Clock at 1212mV: 353W

Those numbers seem surprisingly high to me as well (though I am assuming this is your system with 24GB of RAM, six disk drives and a water cooling system, so that might go some way to explaining it too).

Mind if I ask what you are measuring that with?

We're probably looking at closer to 90% efficiency with the AX1200, so those numbers are going to be more like 611W and 778W DC :woot:
