Christchurch - NZ earthquake

I just to say a big thanks to Australia and US for providing urban rescue assistance to Christchurch, NZ to help rescue survivors of the earthquake. Those specialist rescue team and their dogs are few and far between in NZ so we need help to save as many people as possible.

Christchurch had a 7.1 in September 2010 and was very lucky with no fatalities because it happened at night and was 30Kms away from the city and around 30 Kms deep.

Unfortunately today we had another 6.3 but this time it was only 5km deep and less than 10km away from the city centre and happened at lunch time. I know that Californians will particularly understand what that will mean in terms of loss of life, especially as buildings were already weakened from the previous quake.

Not even a day has gone by and help is on the way. Thank you all so much.

My thoughts are with all of those affected by today's earthquake. The South Island really is experiencing a rough patch at the moment, with the initial 7.3 earthquake in September, the Pike River tragedy in November and now this. :(

This quake has done more damage to my house than the previous quake. Last time there was no damage done but this time the carport has sagged at one end and moved off the support partially at the other and a beam going around the outside of my roof has a gap between it and the roof.

At least I don't live in Christchurch itself but in Rangiora which is about 25 kilometers to the north.

Except for Christchurch city everything else is unaffected so by all means come over as planned.

Also, BGS maps are showing the fault is moving out to sea, reducing the risk of another quake.

That's shown here, on the latest GNS aftershock plot:

Edit: Also, just on BBC news that a search and rescue team is headed to NZ from the UK http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12540471
