Upgrading from a E6600 (Parts inluded with link)

Hello everyone,

 

My P5NE SLI mobo was bricked during a failed attempt to update the BIOS in order to run the newly purchased XFX 5850. So instead of buying a new mobo or sending this one back to ASUS, I have decided that its time to upgrade a few things.

 

So far, I am looking into getting a new mobo (duh), cpu, ram, and a cpu cooler.

 

The main use of this computer is gaming+surfing+watching movies.

 

I overclock the CPU, GPU, and RAM to the max while staying within safe temps and voltage

 

This is what I have for the parts that need to be purchased:

Now, my real question is this: Should I stick with that I am buying? If not please recommend what you believe is a better buy.

Should I wait for the next gen Intel CPU's to come out in early January?

Basically you are looking at close to $600 for the cpu/mobo/ram. Why not also look at the LGA 1366 platform! Maybe something like this:

 

CPU - i7 920/930/950 Depending on if you have a MicroCenter close! If you do the i7 950 is $225 If not then you can find a i7 920/930 on ebay for around $200 maybe a little more!

 

Mobo - Many choices here as well - MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte.

 

RAM - You get to move up to Triple Channel (not much difference on performance, but better for future-proofing)

There are many choices, but you can't really go wrong with Corsair Dominator

 

From the looks of it, going this route could actually save you some money as well! $225 cpu + $200 mobo + $140 RAM = Less than you were spending on the LGA 1156 setup

Good choice of Ram, Cooler and Mobo (either would be great) but I would go with the Maximus given its only a few dollars difference.

 

I wouldn't buy the Core I7-800 series and go with the Core I5-760 instead. Will save you some Dollars, perform just as well for your intended use, easy as to get big overclocks.

Yes!

 

1156 socket is dead... 1366 socket will be dead (replaced by 2011 socket)... 1155 socket has a longer life.

 

If you can wait a few weeks, do it.. You'll also get a better performing CPU. The i7-875k -> i7-2600k... i7-870 -> i7-2600... If you're planning on "overclocking" (over multiplying, in the case of Sandy Bridge), then the K is what you'll want... It's only ~$20 or so more...

Boards - pretty much whatever you find now for the 1156 boards (will vary depending on manufacturer and features, as usual)... Although some boards will cost a fortune (P67A-UD7 MSRP is around $330)...

 

If you were thinking of dropping down to the i5-760, then the i5-2500 (K) would be your target.. and that's just around $200...

 

Remember, there will be launch promotions going on as well (bundling/rebates/discounts) depending where you purchase from.

So your 8800GT is dead. And now your P5NE SLI is also dead. ( both literally) 1366 and 1156 are dead... so yea RMA your P5NE SLI and wait a bit for the new socket. Buying new hardware, is fun, but you know ahts better? taking better care of the one you already have

I do like taking care of my hardware but whatever the case I will wait for a few more weeks to get the new stuff...there done.

i have that exact setup except the cooler. i have the COOLIT ECO and i love it.

i can overclock to 4.1ghz with no problems
