Im not sure but I think its the socket . LGA775 only supports dual channel if I remember correctly . LGA1366 runs tri-channel . An easy way to check is this:

If your motherboard has only 2 ram slots then its dual channel .

If your motherboard has only 4 ram slots then its dual channel .

If your motherboard has only 3 ram slots then its triple channel .

If your motherboard has only 6 ram slots then its triple channel .

Thanks alot man!

Now I am only confused with 1 thing: When looking at coolers, and their dimensions.. Is width (height x depth x width) the same as fan diameter? I just wanna be sure when I start measuring ;)

PS. Is it just me, or aren't there any 3GB RAMs? I mean.. I got told to get 6gb RAM, but I can only find sets of 3 x 1GB and 3 x 2GB etc. :S

diameter is referring to the fan size (and generally equated into the height if it's a tower design)

Who told you to get 6GB of ram?? If you want more than 4GB get 8GB, if you want 6GB then you're going to have to run a ghetto setups of 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Just get 4x2GB and call it a day! Nothing magical about 6GB unless you run a 1366 i7 system

I thought so

When I come to think of it.. I've always wondered why the colours on the RAM slots are different, like yellow-black-yellow-black

Does this mean you gotta put them in the same colour slot for dual channel, or can you have them in the first 2 slots?

EDIT:

wow this is quite a puzzle to see if a cooler fits my MB haha

But so far I've found this amazing picture of the Noctua NH-D14:

noctua_nhd14_015.jpg

and this for the Thermaltake Frio

firo_dimension.jpg

Has anyone seen a similar picture of the Spire TherMax Eclipse II or know the radius or diameter from the cpu towards the RAM slots

SP984B1-V2_11.jpg

Many thanks in advance! - Brutality =)

EDIT2:

What's best?

2 x 4GB PC2-6400 800 MHz DDR2

or

2 x (2 x 2GB PC2-6400 800 MHz DDR2)

?

Maybe I just misunderstood RAMs, but when you buy this product "2 x 4GB PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2" you get two 400 MHz RAMs (Seriously.. RAMs sounds so wrong... I bet I am using a retarded word...) and together they become 800MHz?

If this is true, then you should be able to buy 2 packs of 2 x 2GB PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 and combine them; i.e. 4x 2GB PC2-6400 1600MHz DDR2?

PS. I think it would be nice if this thread could be moved to System Builds?

No the memory that says 2x4GB means that it's 8GBs of 800mhz memory split between two sticks of 4GB 800mhz memory.

2x2GB means that it's two sticks of 2GB running at 800mhz which would total at 4GB of 800mhz.

I also read the Spire Thermax Eclipse 2 was good but it's hard to find on sale places and they never include it in the comparisons with the other top dogs unfortunately. I really don't like frostytech's reviews on coolers since they never have the newer sockets, who cares what the cooler does on a 775 or AM2. I want to see a highly clocked 1366 i7, now THAT will show what it can do!

Thanks alot - btw the guide is good for me cuz I got a socket 775 :D

So this means I can easily buy two sets of 2 x 2GB 1200MHz and combine them and get 8GB running at 1200MHz and not 2400MHz which would kill my MB? :D

yes multiple sticks doesn't multiply their speed of the memory itself. It'd be 4GB of 1200mhz but for DDR2 I'd recommend the sweet spot of 1066mhz CL5 (or 800mhz if you don't plan on overclocking), ask around on forums to buy them because retail prices will rape ya!

the 1200MHz I found is rated CL5 (OCZ Platinum) http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=606369

OCZ Blade Series is also 1200MHz CL5, but a bit more expensive =P

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=591577

Maybe I just misunderstood you

PS. I was thinking of buying 2 packs of the 2 x 2GB, so I'd have 4 sticks, resulting in 8GB 1200MHz CL5 ;P

That rises a new question... come to think of it.. "dual-channel".. that isn't the same as quad-channel...

What's best? 2x4GB or 4x2GB?

Now, I know that the 2 gigs got a lower CL value, but when you got 4 sticks, how does that work with "dual-channel" ?

here's a set http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=441794

675,00 DKK 1066mhz 2x2GB

You'll never OC to the point where 1066mhz wont hold you back.

I couldn't find a 2x4GB kit

Yeah I found that as well, I was just wondering why it was better than the 1200MHz CL5

Now, I'm a man (or boy...) of patience, and since I don't know if my MB is DDR3 or DDR2 and how fast RAMs it supports, I've found all sets, from 800MHz to 1200MHz DDR2 and 1333MHz and 1600MHz DDR3 (I've used the "exclusion method" based on the P5Q models available) - I don't know this because I'm not home and won't get home before Sunday. All I know is that it's got 1600MHz FSB and I've got some PC2-6400 RAM sticks on it atm, hehe

So here is the list :P

DDR3:

1600MHz (PC3-12800):

4x2GB CL6

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=4181464

2x4GB CL7

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=4316596

1333MHz (PC3-10666):

4x2GB CL7

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=655115

2x4GB CL9

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=4186350

DDR2:

800MHz (PC2-6400)

4x2GB CL4

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=373740

2x4GB CL5

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=708153

1066MHz (PC2-8500)

4x2GB CL5

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=441794

1200MHz (PC2-9600)

4x2GB CL5

http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=606369

So all I need to know now is why the 1066MHz are better than the 1200MHz and which my MB supports =P

I also finally found the dimensions on the Spire TherMax cooler, so I now know what to measure when I get home =P

Cooler radius (CPU Towards RAM)

Noctua NH-D14 = 89.5mm

Spire TherMax Eclipse II = 65.5mm

Thermaltake Frio = 59.0mm

and now I dunno what I could spend time on now xD

Once again, I really wanna thank those who posted in this topic for the AMAZING help you've given me towards upgrading my PC =)

Cheers Brutality

What's your motherboard's model number, I can tell it's a P43 or P45 but P5Q tells me only that, what's the full name??

for an example this one is called the Asus P5Q Deluxe

Yeah I know mate, but all I know now is that it's Asus P5Q 1600MHz FSB, and that ain't helping much.. When I get home (Sunday) I'll just check the box and see what it can handle ;)

But try to answer my question regarding the 1200Mhz RAM sticks :P
