jr_sanford Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 I have an Asus motherboard and for the life if me I can't get to my CPU because I don't know the secret handshake to remove the fan/cooling fins. I don't want to pry or use any steel tools to do this. Does anybody know what it takes to get my CPU changed? J.R. By the way, I love you all! zedsed420 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Sometimes the heatsink and cpu get stuck by the thermal paste. What I do is give the heatsink a little twist before I pull it off. Make sure you have completely removed all screws attaching the heatsink to the motherboard and then give a little twist, it "should" come right off. Is it an AMD proc or an Intel? Crazy_Nate Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Two things that may help: Heat and shear forces (easily applied by rotating the heatsink). For heat, either run a stress test just before you plan on removing the processor, or use a hair dryer. It shouldn't take too much force (no prying!). kuri Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 What Asus motherboard do you have? If you don't know, what kind of CPU is it? Are you having problems with the push-pins? The clamps?
jr_sanford Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) It's an Intel Pentium, 4 - 1.5gHz. It's the cooling fins that seem to be hard to get out. I'll try the twist move. Thanks to all that have replied. Your suggestions are most welcomed. J.R. Edited March 13, 2010 by jr_sanford
