Mobo and Ram for i7 920

Recommended Posts

I need some of the resident gurus to give me your suggestions for the best mobo/ram combination for overclocking an Intel i7 920 and the reasons you think it's the best. Thanks in advance.

MSI X58 Eclipse SLI has done well for me with a variety of memory! from a 3 gig set through some, mushkin, ocz, corsair, geil ,Patriot. I have not had any compatibility problems so far and currently run a set of Mushin blackline at 787-20 1866 when I am not testing. Otherwise I use the blue at 7-7-20 at 1200Mhz just based on the bclock to get to 3GHz.

The Asus P6T has done well fore me as well as the MSI X58 Platinum SLI

I see there are 4 versions of the P6T. Is any one version better for the stated purpose?

They were released in the following order, from the oldest to the latest:

P6T

P6T SE

P6T Deluxe

P6T Deluxe V2

P6TD Deluxe

By the way, what is your budget ??

In my opinion one of the best motherboards for overclocking is the EVGA E760 CLASSIFIED, but it is expensive.

I am currently running a ASUS Rampage II GENE and I pretty happy with the results. 4.0 GHZ + overclock in few mins.

The EVGA board is more than I want to spend. The Asus P6T Deluxe V2 and the P6TD Deluxe are the same price on Newegg. The only spec difference I saw was the Deluxe V2 has dual lan ports. Don't need that. P6TD did have slightly better reviews so I may go in that direction.

Here are my ram considerations.

The Asus Gene II is another great motherboard, has plenty of features, overclocks like its big brother the RIIE. Definitely one to consider. The EVGA X58 LE is another good board.

This will be an ATX form factor build so I'm not considering any m-ATX mobos for now. I did look at the EVGA X58 LE. I'll have to do some more research. Does anyone have any comments on the ram I listed?

go for the gigabyte GA EX-58 UD-7 A or UD-5A if ur looking for future proofing ur system(and have the cash). It has usb 3.0 and supports sata 6 gb/sec interfaces as well as well as good overclocking options im myself using the UD-5 since i couldn't affort the UD-7. You can check its features here http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mother...?ProductID=3304.

As for RAM i can definitely recommend the corsair DDR3 1600 C9 (9-9-9-24) 3x2 GB kit works like a peach and plus the amazing lifetime warranty.
