Gunner75 Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Im currently having a build completed by my friend as i work to many hours on my job to do it myself. He is asking if i want to overclock the processor. As stated above it is a Q9550 coupled with a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L Mobo, EVGA Geforce 8800 GTS 512, and a Coolermaster Haf 932 case. for cooling since the haf case is so well at air flow im also having a zalman 9900 heatsink installed. Ive checked around and all im able to find is people overclocking on this processor with this mobo but not with this entire setup. I know the DS3L is a great mobo for overrclocking, and i know the Q9550 is a great over clocker but im looking for ideas of what type of target we should shoot for a completely stable, and dependable processor that stays fairly cool. id like to have temps no higher then 55c and since my ambient room temp is usually around 70 degrees and with this setup i would think it would be possible to obtain 4.0 on air. I would like to hit 4.5 and im not completely ruling out teaming up a water cooled system with an air cooled system. having a water system and a nice case like this as well as the uv lighting treatment im having done will look great. but im not looking to go water unless i have to. ive never had a water system. as i said im looking for ideas from you guys who know ocing to give me ideas on what i can expect to get with my setup. Also please save the flame fest i know most you guys are AMD fans and not so much towards the intel side. but hey i got a deal on this build 700 bucks for all the equipment and my buddy is doing the work for me. GabrielT Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Ok the reason you havn't gotten a response yet is nobody can promise you an overclock and every chip is different, also because this question is asked constantly and your new so you didn't know sorry so long for a response. Don't set your sights to high just see how high you can go with it man, it's the journey not the destination. Oh and people here like Intel plenty and you wouldn't get flamed for it even if they didn't And welcome to OCC
ccokeman Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I'll go out on a limb here and say that 3.6 should be easily achievable. Now keep in mind not all chips and all boards will overclock the same. You are using a P35 chipset which is at least 2 year old technology and should do alright with a BIOS update. Every 45nm Quad I have used save the 9300 would go to 3.6.
