problems with new rig.

Okay, I helped a friend build a new rig and I'm having some problems. We chose a 775 intel core 2 quad, evga 740i mobo, 8 gig of ocz ddr2 ram, evga 260oc edition gpu. Put Vista ultimate 64 bit on it.

1st problem: I cannot boot up with the 8 gigs in. It does this weird post screen restart. Starts to post for literly 3 seconds and reboots. Keeps doin this untill I turn off the computer. Works with 4 gigs in, in the correct ram slots of course, but not the 8.

2nd problem: The board does have built in graphics, even hdmi, but obviously we want the 260 to be the graphics. The drivers from disc and web site downloaded fine. It does its normal restart and when it boots back up, no nvida graphics. As-in, drivers are there and I have the monitor connected to the card but it is not using the drivers for the graphics.

3rd problem: So he has had a samsung 20" 2370 monitor, awsome monitor. It is not showing full screen. I adjusted the resolution and it still wont fill the screen. It adjusts the icon sizes and all that jazz but the monitor still is displaying with a 2" black bar all the way around the window. I did the self test on the monitor and it is working fine. Full screen.

I really appreciate it guys if ya could help me out on this. He's jonesing to play WoW and I dont like being stabbed. lol.

1st problem: Make sure the motherboard support 8 GBs of DDR2 RAM, also go into the bios and see what you can figure out in there.

2nd problem: Try and go into device manager and disable the built-in graphics and see if that works, if it doesn't, simply start in safe mode to enable the built-in graphics again, but I'm sure it will work.

3rd problem: What kind of cable are you using to plug in the Samsung? as you mentioned before, its hooked up to the video card, so chances are its some error due to the integrated video, or because it won't use the Nvidia Drivers. EDIT: If your monitor has an auto feature, run it.

That's all I can come up with for now, so try it and tell me how it goes, if it doesn't work, give me more information about your specs.

here is what he has:

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.198548

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.198548

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115041

CPU cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835106102

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.198114

Monitor: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218063394621

So, the mobo does support 8 gigs. I did disable the onboard graphics. Safe mode doesnt help. Using dvi to monitor. Auto doesnt do a thing either. Monitor did work on old comp before he got a real nasty of a virus.

Q: A virus cant effect a monitor, right? lol. Sorry if it sounds dumb but I'm searching for any explination on this.

Your right, a virus cannot affect the monitor directly. So one thing I thought up of, the motherboard could be faulty. If you have any other left other RAM sticks, put them all there and see if it detects all of it.So when you disable the onboard graphics, does it now detect your Nvidia drivers and stuff? Im thinking that's the same problem with the monitor. But yeah, if the driver detects the Nvidia Control Panel and stuff, go in there, and look up the settings of your monitor. Also, what resolution are you displaying?

On the monitor.

Often times, once i set my resolution, i need to stretch the video to fit the screen.

Go into your monitor settings, on the monitor menu( physical hardware) and stretch to remove the black bars.

Sounds like it was configured from the factory at a lower resolution.

The monitor is fixed. Somehow, nvidia updated their drives twice in the past few days. That was the fix. Still having problems with the ram tho. We have tried all 4 sticks of ram, 2 at a time, in all combonations, with memtest and they are all working pereferctly. we try to put all 4 sticks, 8 gigs, it does the weird post for 2 seconds and reboot thing. Over and over till you shut it off. I'm about to pull teeth and hair.

grr... I really dont want to...

Thats pretty much your option... or just run 4 gigs and sell the other 4. Running 8 gigs is well known to be finicky, it is rarely plug and play.
