cloudminder Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Well this is my first post so I would first like to say hello to everyone. I have been out of the PC building game for about 5 or 6 years so I am playing catch-up on all of the newer technology. I stumbled upon this site in my effort to retrieve as much information as I could before settling on all the parts. I was hoping to get some opinions on the following list of items. MB: EVGA 132-YW-E180-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 HS: ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink MEM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 PS: Thermaltake Toughpower W0178RU 850W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V GC: EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX x2 HD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB CD: SAMSUNG 22X DVD
Verran Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I vote no on the board, no on the ram and no on the video cards. First of all, why two 9800GTXs? You'd be much better off just getting one better card for the price of those two. Like a 260 or 280GTX. There's no reason to buy two lesser cards when you can just get one good one. Also, ditch the 790 and DDR3. There's no point, especially with a Q6600. That's a very low FSB processor. The high memory speeds of DDR3 will do you no good. This is an instance where new and shiny does not mean better. Go with DDR2 and you'll never know the difference, except it will be much cheaper. Also, stay away from the nVidia 775 boards if at all possible. If you drop the 2 9800s and just got for one higher card, you can get a non-SLI board which will be much more stable. I'd recommend a P45 board. The 680i/780i/790i boards are all very buggy and quirky.
Computation Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I think one GTX 200 series card would outperform two 9800GTX for less money. O_o
T3mpest Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 agreed with most, the XFX 260 black will beat your SLI with out the hassle, DDR3 pointless unless your going I7. but i do like my 780i, haven't had any problems with it. Crazy_Nate Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 What's your overall budget? People around here love putting things together.
cloudminder Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I do appreciate all of the suggestions. My budget is around $1400 - $1500 or so. What if I were to switch out the 2 gtx for 1 EVGA GTX 285 and I am looking at a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P instead of the 790i. avo345 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 a $1500 dollar budget that doesn't include a monitor will get you a solid i7 build without a problem. By solid, I mean a gtx260, 6GB ram, gigabyte mobo, good PSU, etc, no need to skimp on parts. Anyway, so yeah, I vote for an i7
