Help Me To Spend $1500 On A Rig

Sorry but a 1000watt power supply would be overkill. First off a 4870x2 uses about 200 something watts at load, and 2 of them in crossfire use about 586watts at full load. Wattage is not everything either. You have to also consider amperage of the rails. The PC Power & Cooling 750watt power supply I selected has proven to beat 1000watt power supplies with multiple rails thanks to it's single powerful 60 amp rail. The one I choose should be more than enough for him.

As for the Asus Rampage board, I have it and yes it's a good board but for the very little performance difference it just isn't worth it. Your going to get the same overclock that you would on a X48 motherboard that you would get on a P45 motherboard. The extra money your spending on the board is for more features and accessories only.... thats about it, and it will be putting him over his budget

1. I was just thinking the 1000watt to the future

2. If theres a large price difference then i agree just get p45, i didn't look at prices sorry

the 750watt power supply will allow him to add on a ton more things in the future, even if he wants to crossfire.

BTW welcome to OCC :thumbs-up:

Fred, tacohunter52, Queenz, xtrememgamer, turopihiliac and ekim.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions guys.

I don't think I will go for Crosshair setup.

BTW, why would you guys recommend a GTX280 over a 4870X2? I thought with the exception Crysis, 4870X2 is the obvious choice over GTX280?

Thanks for the idea on the Asus Rampage. I really don't want to squeeze each bit of fsb out of the proc. Think that extra money on the Rampage will be a overkill.

One last thing, I'm really troubled over Core 2 vs Core quad.

Should I get a 3.00Ghz C2D or get a quad core and OC it over 3.00Ghz?

I think with 3.00G(+ 4870X2 or GTX280) cores I would be able to play almost all of the games at high-res. And it would give me a good multitasking too.

Thank you for the info the PSU.

So X48 is the way to go? wouldnt P45 will be much stable?

Thanks a lot guys.

Cheers.

Yes the 4870 x2 is the better card

and like timmy said 2 cores and 4 cores don't make much of a difference right now but when games start utilizing quad core abilities it would be nice to have one on hand

as for stability if your not gonna overclock i wouldn't worry about it

Core 2 duo's and core 2 Quads with same specs will perform around the same in games until they are able to fully optimise quad cores. then the quads will go pretty damn good.

thanks mate.

But I just cheked in INtel site and E8500 doesnt work with P45 or X48?

They are not in their chipset list?

regarding processors if you want a quad, I'd get a Q9550 or if you want a dual, get a E8500. Becase the price over the Q9450/E8400 is so cheap that it's worth it to get the higher multiplier. Also the x48 is pretty much pointless unless you are set on crossfiring, and only if you crossfire. Otherwise the P45 will serve you just fine (as you see it is doing for me).

The new 4850x2 ($350) or XFX 260 Black Edition ($310) give the 4870x2 a run for it's money and will offset the higher cost of the step from E8400->E8500 or Q9450->Q9550

E8400 @ 164.99 3.0ghz 9x Multi

E8500 @ 189.99 3.16ghz 9.5x Multi

Q9450 @ 329.99 2.66hz 8x Multi (think this may be an old price and it looks like they are discontinued)

Q9550 @ 319.99 2.83ghz 8.5x Multi

I'd hold out until the xfx 260 or the 4850x2 hits shelves go nuts.

here the OCC reviews of them

XFX Core 216 Black Edition

Sapphire 4850x2

enjoy :)

Thanks man.

This keeps getting harder.

I was pretty much set on 4870X2 as it gives the best performance/$..

But seems 4850X2 does gives 4870X2 a close run.. I'm defitely considering 4850X2 but where did you find it for $350? I only found one on Newegg for $430.

BTW thats a cool OC man!
