I was wondering the same thing about my RDX200 in combination with 2 HD3870s I've got coming next week: has anybody had any luck running either SLI or CF setups with PCI-E 2.0 graphics cards on a PCI-E 1.0a board?

 

I guess experience is the only thing that can tell for sure if it will work as sources on the internet are contradicting eachother about this matter...

It works, I installed my 8800GT last night. But this thing is long, and problems do arise with the SATA ports making it so I have to use my bottom slot. All described here

As has been said, it should work fine. Just make shure you put it in the top pci-e slot, as that will give you the full x16.

 

Except a lot of people won't be able to run it in the Top slot, the card is so long it blocks the first two SATA ports

Hi guys

 

Asus was delayed so I got the above instead.

It's 675Mhz instead of 700.

 

Machine is now SLI-DR + 2GB OCZ + OCZ 700Watt + FX-60 with this card.

 

 

3dMark 05 is 14400 and 3d Mark 06 is 9641.

 

All seems to be running fine.

 

Can you let me know how these figures compare as it's a long time since I looked gfx performance.

 

All ready for Crysis this xmas.

Also .... card does block sata 3&4 so enabled Sil3114 for sata and stuck my third drive on sata5 ... all working fine.

Would there be any underclocking for the GPU if you plug a PCIE 2.0 card into a PCIE 1.0 or 1.1 board? i guess im trying to (yet again) confirm if an 8800 would work on a DFI LanParty Expert motherboard in single mode (not SLI)

 

from what i gather a PCIE 2.0 gfx card uses all 16 lanes of traffic, wouldnt you hinder performance using PCIE 2.0 cards in SLI on a PCIE 1.0/1.1 motherboard? would it cut them both down to 8x and thus underclock the GPUs to half speed and render the SLI no more powerful than a single?

I don't believe so but I have an expert and an 8800gts 512 on the way, when I get it I can run some tests compared to my c2d rig. Hopefully you get your answer before that though.

As has been re-iterated numerous times around here,current PCI-e 2.0 cards are fully backwards compatible with PCI-e 1.x motherboards. In fact most if not all currently available graphics cards don't even fully saturate x8 bandwidth; so here wouldn't be any real world difference between running it in an x8 vs x16 slot, only difference might be in benchmarks.

 

The PCI-e 2.0 standard is basically a form of future-proofing to be sure that the new motherboards being released will be compatible with graphics hardware that' further down the road.

I'm currently running 2 EVGA 8800GT KO's in SLI on a DFI NF4 SLI D. They work, they smoke my prior single 7900GT KO. In comparison to a EVGA 680i board and Intel CPU, of course it would be better, but.. it is what it is. I can play Crysis on all high (objects on medium) just fine. A single card is just as close in fps, but with more swing in framerates at times. It works, 1st slot 2nd slot, single card. And as well as 2 cards in SLI. If one is completely worried about benchmarks, then build a new system. Otherwise, I'm telling you it's more than fine. You won't be disappointed unless you are hung up on comparing, not actually playing!:nod:
