MiniButch Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Hi all, I have recently purchased a few upgrades for my PC which included a: AMD opteron 165, DFI LanPArty UT RDX200 CF-DR (Mobo) and BFG 8800GTS. I planned to simply replace my existing mobo, cpu and gfx for these new installments and then configure it all later (new drivers etc). On completion of the hardware installation I turn on my PC only to be greeted with a black (no signal) screen. I turned off the PC and doubled checked every connection including the RAM (2GB OCZ PLatinum) and it all seemed to be attached together properly. At this stage I began to suspect it was my gfx as nothing was beong displayed. So in the old fashion of trial and error I assembled my old components to test it. I power up my system as I would usually do and yet I still get a blank screen from my old 9800 pro (which is confusing as it worked fine yesterday). I tried it with my RAM out, 1 stick in, switched around, then bth sticks, and low and behold the same reading (no display but the standy light, 4 diagnostic lights and DRAM lights are all on and solid. I removed my gfx card but the same thing happened. I then went and reset the CMOS (powered off then switched the jumper to 3 & 2) waited a few second sn then changed it back, powered back on and nothing. Just the same, familiar blank screen showing standby. Sorry for the long story but this is my situation and am in need of dire help (if possible) Regards
red930 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Power supply, I'm guessing. 450W is cutting it pretty close to have an 8800GTS and a power-hungry mobo and CPU. Specs to the PSU? Never heard of Jeantech before. Also, you got your RAM in slots 1 and 3?
Guest MadDias Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 so u took ur old mobo, cpu and gfx-card but used the same psu that u used to fire up ur rdx200? 450w is way too low for a dualcore setup with a card like the 8800gts. 480w is the minimum for a dfi build.(singlecore cpu, everything at stock) maybe something inside ur psu is broken because of an overload from ur new build. MiniButch Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 It could possibly be the PSU (but I have reason for doubt) because The system powers up fine, all fans running, CPU Fan buzzing, with my GFX card HSF spinning and the Chipset dfi humming and 2 extra fans at full speed Thats my PSU= http://www.jeantech.com/450.htm Tried RAM is slots 1, 1 & 2, 1 & 3, no RAM, and all the same consequence. I have read alot on newegg.com of boards being broke from new? could this be the case? Im really stumped as to what the problem is. # Thanks for help so far, keep it coming:)

MiniButch Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Ok, so many of you kind people have suggested its my PSU thats gone tits up, you could be right but asap Im going to throughly test it on my old PC and family PC. Any recommendations on a quality PSU for the cheapest price? In any case have you got any other ideas on how to sort my problem? I still cant get over the fact the diagnostic lights are all on and steady even when I have RAM and GFX out
red930 Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 The PSU only has 29A combined on the 12v rails... too weak for a setup of your caliber. Yes the fans may spin up but your system still doesn't have enough power.. One that most of us will recommend is the 700W OCZ GameXStream. It runs for around $115 USD. That would do the job nicely but if he cant stretch to that http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct....rodid=CA-009-HP may have just enough to get by [see as he said cheap ]but do some research first to see if others are useing it with a setup like yours as at least its on the http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/buildyourown2.html And http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_buil...d_powersupplies Certified Lists. Abit more expensive here in the UK http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct....rodid=CA-011-HP What's the difference, the Hiper is cheaper but 730, wheres the OCZ is slightly more expensive but only 700? As you may see Im not very experience with PSU's. In any case I think it might be on the christmas list! You guys pretty sure that its my PSU's that is the problem? I wont take it as a guarentee or anything lol but one has to start somewhere! EDIT: What I am asking is that the PSU (at the moment) is the main bump in my system? And what is RMA Ive seen it everywhere but dont have a clue what it means.
KPR Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization or something to that effect. You have to get a number (RMA #) from your vendor before you can return merchandise, I guess so they can expect it back and then issue you a refund, replacement or whatever you and your vendor agree to do. I can't speak for the RDX boards but when I first got my NF4 Ultra-D I used a 550 TTG which has a pretty good reputation for stable voltages. System worked fine for a month or so then I started getting reboots. I replaced my psu with the OCZ 700 on recommendations in this forum and haven't had the problem since. I still have the occassional cold boot issue but I guess I'v adjusted to pressing my pc power button twice to get it started. I am starting to think this may be the problem because I tried my PSU in my old system and it doesnt work.
Guest MadDias Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 yes.. it is possible. my enermax 600w shuts itself down if i draw to much power on one of the rails. it´s kind of a protection against overload (a fuse or something).
