Cobra189 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Well the old single core venice 3500+ is getting pretty tired and with my incessant multitasking I have always made single core chips struggle so now it's time to go with a dual core chip. It's been just over a year since I setup my rig and I'm ready to move up but I have been away long enough I don't know the in's and out's of the new cores/chips so I'm looking for some advice. I do have some requirements: 1. Budget of $300 2. Must be 989 The rest of my rig should still be in my sig with the exception of a new 1.6tb raid setup to be installed with the new CPU. Thanks ni advance!
red930 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I think newegg still has the Opteron 165 for around $160, still the best deal around probably.
ebdoradz Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 opetron 165 all the way got mine @ 3.0Ghz for fun and running 2.8Ghz at 1.28V (stock 1.3) for everyday use best bang for the buck/deal ive buy so far
p0tter Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Opteron Multi 165 = 1.8 (9x) 170 = 2.0 (10x) 175 = 2.2 (11x) 180 = 2.4 (12x) I would go with the 165 from newegg, the steppings have been good as of late. If you do serious multi tasking 2GB would also "feel" faster.
Cobra189 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Well I guess that settles it. Opteron 165 it is and for 1/2 the price I was planning on spending Thansk for the advice guys. I'm sure I'll be back with questions and some results once I get it in the mail
p0tter Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Hopefully you get a CCBBE stepping, they scale well.
t_ski Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Since you have the surplus in your budget, pick me one up, too.
Angry_Games Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 before you do anything else, I advise you to fix that ridiculously long sig...compact it into something more decent please. oh, and you got about 30 minutes to stop breaking my other rule about locations...so I advise you to quickly go back and read the rules you agreed to before being allowed to post here in this forum... stickx Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Got an Opteron 170 CCBBE 0615 for $189 a few days ago from NewEgg. Haven't started testing it yet, but I think the stepping looks good, and with some DDR500 RAM I hope to get it running fast.
Cobra189 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I ended up getting a CCBBE 0617 so I have high hopes. Should be dropping it in later today after I get everything ready to reinstall windows.
