zkissane Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Not a computer mag suggestion, but it works for me to burn up time: Sudoku. When I was doing exercise support at MCB Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in June, I bought a huge book of those. For about 10 days, work was basically, get up at 3pm, shower, eat, get to the base about 7pm, talk to my coworker whom I was relieving (and who would relieve me 12 hours later) for about 10 minutes, talk on the phone to my bosses at Fort Hood, Texas, for about 10 minutes, and then 11 hours and 40 minutes of staring at a computer screen waiting for bad things to happen (that never did). Doing 1 four-star Sudoku problem burned up about 2 hours for me. I did so much that the Sudoku thought pattern started mentally appearing in unhealthy ways, like figuring the restaurant tips on my meals: "Now, I've got a 1, a 2, a 5, and a 3, that means my choices here are 4,6,7,8,9" "No, no, no, this is the bill, just take 20% of $12.53!" "Oh, right. But 20%-ish of $12.53 is $2.50 and I already have the 2 and the 5!" "Maybe it's time I do something else tonight during my shift, hmmm?"
