Dont know Raleigh specifically, but I have found that in MOST of the Southeast, the best cell coverage is either Verizon or Alltel, and Bellsouths DSL is hard to beat, IF its available in your area.

I have optimum online (cable) now, I was hoping to find another cable ISP, since satellite is still really expensive. I think it was several hundred $ from Hughesnet, just for the equipment that uploads via satellite as well. Thanks, I will still keep that in mind though, in case I have to "settle" for DSL.

One thing to keep in mind down here in thunderstormland... well here anyway... the cable goes out dang near everytime it rains, so no TV, no internet. With DSL, well... I had it for eight days without electricity after a bad ice storm... (didnt get to us it, no power! but I still had the phone, all the power & cable was down)

I honestly dont know how much faster cable, satellite, T1 etc is over DSL, but I know I cant go back to dial up, and cant imagine why *I* would need anything faster than DSL. (*I* am not you)

Here's a link that you might find interesting. http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34128

I will get up with some friends and see if it's there's anyone to hook up with about the drywall. The constuction is going strong but our neighbors from the south seem to hustle for less so they get most of the labor jobs. It's labor day today, and I'll make some calls. I know painters. So we'll see.

I dont know about where you are refereing too... but if you end up in the mountains like I was in VA 25 miles outside of Lynchburg for example its pretty much Satelite once you get out in the sticks. Where ever that may be eventually. { just woke up! 4:30 am } Also the point he made about thunder storms is quite true at least it was that way in VA not in Wilmington N.C though! Check out Wilmington its a really cool place like 4 colledges and its by the shore. I am not in the line of work that you went to school for but liveing in Wilmington was very nice and I am sure that if you checked it out VIA a visit you would probably agree! The Beaches in NC are very nice indeed.

I can tell you for a fact that just because an analog phone line is active it doesn't mean the DSL provision is functioning.

An analog phone line gets its power directly from the phone company central office unless there is a multiplexer between the CO and your phone. Even then the phone company will many times provide the 48V power to the multiplexer from the CO.

Due to an 18,000 foot wire limit and the fact that DSL service speed decreases as the wire length increases, most DSL service requires a remote DSLAM between the CO and your home.

These pieces of hardware usually sit on the side of the road on a pedestal near your location. If there is no power to the DSLAM, DSL will not function.

The DSLAM provides the DSL service to your home and connects back to the CO via fiber and both of these functions require electricity.
