Shinobi Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Ever since switching to this ATI 9600XT i've had some pretty bad cold boot issues, as in, it won't boot up no matter what. Usually i just have to turn it off and leave it for awhile and try again and it will boot. Its a completely random issue. It can be fine for a few days then all of a sudden it will flare up again. It happens whether overclocked, at stock or even underclocked. I doubt its a driver issue for obvious reasons. I've tried 4 different bioses, disabling APIC(in case somehow that was causing the issue), raising the AGP voltage, changing the AGP Latency, anything that i can think of that could possibly be causing it. I know some ppl who've had issues with their ATI's where the monitor initially fails to pick up the signal, but this isn't the case here. Anyone any ideas or maybe experienced this problem before? learners permit Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 No crashes just boot failure?
Shinobi Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 No crashes at all no, just random cold boots and nothing that a simple reset can fix... I have to completely power down the system for awhile and then try again. Its getting annoying now. All the fans spin up and everything, just no POST. Luckily it booted up fine this morning. System runs great. I was hoping someone could shed some light on this issue.
Jadawin Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 *points at PSU* Had that with a PSU that was fine but every once in a while dropped one voltage below an acceptable level. And then it wouldn't work for a while. A new PSU fixed that. So if you can swap the PSU to check it out, it's worth a try. Shinobi Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I was thinking it could possibly be the PSU but its brand new(only a few months old) and it should be more than sufficient for my system, and its solid when its running. This card doesn't seem to draw as much power as my old Nvidia card either i've noticed. I don't have another PSU so i guess if i can find another solution then i'll have to see about an RMA just to see if it is that. soundx98 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Time for War Mod?
THunDA Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Time for War Mod? Uh oh.. THE famous WAR MOD !! .. I think it would be worth a shot for sure.. When I had my Infinity I was getting boot problems sometimes, but no where near the way some people were getting them.. Then came the WAR MOD and it all disappeared.. !! Zelig Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Fast writes off?
Shinobi Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I need Fast Writes on or my card won't function right, its a 9600XT. Its a common problem with the ATI 9600 series and certain games... With Fast Writes disabled it constantly crashes ingame. I've already tried it with Fast Writes disabled just to see but it was still the same. I don't think the Warmod will help in this instance tbh. Gonna be doing some work on my system when my Zalman Fan Bracket & Arctic Ceramique arrives(hopefully tomorrow) so i may give it a shot then just to see if it helps... Can anyone confirm a 9600XT 128mb consumes less power than a Nvidia FX5600 256mb? I've noticed my 3.3v rail is stronger since installing the 9600XT. Tbh, i'd have though it would be more power hungry being a more powerful card but i guess maybe it could just be down to the design of the cards or the fact the FX5600 has more memory? Trevor Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Try making sure it's seated correctly. Take it out and put it back in, make sure it's not in crooked.
Shinobi Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Hmmm. I seem to have fixed it quite by accident. Problem sorted
