Technology Good or Bad?

After I had a long discussion with a friend about technology, I decided to ask your opinion about this. Is technology good or bad for mankind? I think technology is something good overall, of course it has some bad points, but not bad enough. In my opinion technology is bad only because people don't use it how it is supposed to. My friend says the life was better 100 years ago.

I think the average person is much too absorbed into computers and home gadgetry.

Technology overall encompasses many things, but I do believe that the average person's common sense is going down the drain more and more while our iwhile we blindly think that e're getting smarter and smarter.

I like to think I do a somewhat decent job knowing hands on skills and worthwhile non-computer skills while balancing being on the computer quite a bit.

I don't even really know what my point is.

I think i know what your getting at. The average person is so dependent on technology that they don't know how to operate when it goes out. No cell phone coverage! What am i going to do? Throw a hissy fit then call and complain when i do get coverage. Powers out, my life is over, no pc no tv, what will i do.

A funny one from my experience, Person 1 "My nail gun won't fire!" Person 2 "Have you... blah blah blah about clearing etc" Person 1 "Still doesn't work!" 2 "Then i guess you's better go manual till lunch when i can take a look at it." 1 "Manual? Whats that, i don't have a manual for this gun." 2 "No do it manually, you know with a hammer." 1 "A hammer? Who uses a hammer. That takes too long and my arm gets sore." 2 *Facepalm*

And again, the bobcat is broke, but we still need to move a bunch of sawdust for stalls. Guess we better go find something else to do. You can't mean to do it with *gasp* a wheelbarrow and shovel?

People are so dependent they can't function when left with the basics. I used to know a guy who literaly drove around the corner to get the paper, it probably took longer to open and start the car back down the driveway pull around the corner park, go in buy the paper come out pull back around park etc. and go in than it would to cut through the yard and come out 50 ft from the store and walk.:pfp:And if his wife had the car he sent one of the kids for the paper.

Though the funniest i have seen recently is that when the projector goes out at Sunday service we can't have hymns cause the hymnal under every chair in the sanctuary is only for looks...... You wouldn't actually use it for its purpose.....

or as my dad qould put it..Do something "constructive"

but then you have the opposite..one of my friends who's on Facebook 24/7...he can't even cook egg and bacon!! ????

Technology is neither good nor bad, it is a tool, they key is how you use it. BTW you guys have given me a great idea for a show segment this week. Thanks thumbsup3.gif

He's probably never had to. I'm sure if he took an hour out his day he'd be able to.

People who can't do basic tasks without technology are people who usually just use technology to be lazy.

The people who can do without are usually the ones smart enough to improve what is already there.

This is a gross generalization but it tends to hold true. How many real engineers/inventors/gearheads do you know that are helpless when the power goes out? Or their favorite power tool breaks? Or the instructions are wrong?

Technology is tool. Tools are only intended to make work easier/quicker when used properly. Technology is a tool that is often misapplied and does not make work easier/quicker as with any tool that is used incorreclty. I don't believe there is a good or bad to it in any moral sense, it simply possible to be beneficial to tasks, the outcome dependent on the users.

Some could say that if you cannot forge your own hammer, you have no right to use a hammer. But that's not very practical, since few people could now forge a hammer by hand, yet so many people can use a hammer just fine. A hammer is just as much classified as technology as any electronic. Sooo... technology simply is...

Technology is the devil. At least that's what one of my cousin's says.

I agree with several other posts - it's a tool. Since it's a tool it has the ability to be used the right way or the wrong way. I do think that (the internet and social websites specifically) can contribute to impersonal isolation, detachment and a sedentary lifestyle. As an example (another "when I was young" story) I didn't know any fat kids. Really, I can't remember a single fat kid in grade school or jr. high. Type 2 diabetes... huh what is that? We spent all our time outdoors, playing, running around and getting into trouble. The ready availability of porn on the internet is a bane on society. It objectifies women, caters to self satisfaction and de-emphasizes effort and commitment.
