Obama Wants To Delay Dtv Switch

This has been out for a while. DailyTech's actually slow on the draw here but I just saw it there again and it reminded me to post it here.

Grrr! Just switch it. One motion, like a band-aid! Some people will be without TV, yes, but you could wait eight more years and there's still gonna be lazy turds that haven't prepared. With all the tons of promoting they've done for this February switch date, if they back out now, they're going to look like fools. (Well, bigger fools  ) And if that happens, who will trust the next date? Why should they?

The switch is the kick in the pants some people are going to need to get off their cans and get those converter boxes. The number of people who didn't get coupons are very slim, and of those how many do you think ONLY have OTA signals to rely on? Probably far less. We're talking about a few percent of the population. That's minuscule. That's a margin of error. That's acceptable. <_<

Wow, it's not like there hasn't been enough warning. What really sucks is that there probably a huge number of $40 cards that won't get used because people got an extra "just in case".

I'm suprised they aren't keeping the switch date on schedule... some of those jobs "created" by his stimulus package could be people employed in businesses to provide physical and technical support for the switch, which would go hand-in-hand with "modernizing and upgrading the country's infrastructure," just as they have been saying, no?

Not only that, but that frequency spectrum from the old analog signals is already sold and paid for as I understand it. I wonder if the buyers have any legal grounds in the case of a delay (meaning the gov't can't deliver).

Also, Phil's got a good point. A lot of these coupons may never be used for just that reason. Given that the whole reasoning for this is a shortage of funding for additional coupons, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that no one's accounted for the money left over from unused coupons. After all, they do expire after 90 days (IIRC)...

I'm with you Verran. The longer they put it off the longer people will put off upgrading their equipment.

This was my reply to a similar topic on a different forum...

At the current switchover deadline, it will have been 40 months since the Digital Switchover bill was passed... that was more then enough time.

It's a government run program so what do you expect?

I remember when the "switch" was scheduled for 2003 then 2005 and again for 2008 before they settled on 2009. This has been going on since 1996 and they still won't require Low Power stations to convert to Digital.

And some people want these fools to manage their health-care. Sheesh!

You don't have to like it, but this is actually a really good point! :P

I support Dem ideas a lot, but on health care they're lost me.
