My_Inner_Fred Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I just recently saw something about cooling your pc by submerging it in transpartent oil any of you guys done this before or have info bout it? Thx Fred out.
iKillSteal Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 (edited) It's a bad idea because... 1) Oil is more viscous than water. You'll need a more powerful pumps, larger tubing, etc which yields in a higher total cost over all other cooling solutions, save for phase change and the like. 2) Oil will collect all sorts of organic and inorganic particles. Unless you fill the system in a completely sterile environment and then seal it from the outside environment, it will eventually become a health hazard. 3) Since all of your components are submerged in the oil, it's going to heat up FAST. Faster than you can cool it using conventional methods. This is especially true if you submerge a high-end graphics card in there. 4) Clean up is a royal PITA. 5) Search for posts by user coolcat97 for other reasons why you shouldn't ever attempt doing something like that. There are other reasons but those are pretty much the main ones. Edited May 25, 2008 by iKillSteal
paulktreg Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 This one's probably the wackiest! Oil Cooled PC
Boldeagle Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 (edited) Another wacky one: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/strip-fans,1203.html Couldn't believe it. http://www.tomshardware.com/oil-cooled-mod,video-267.html Edited May 29, 2008 by Boldeagle
Rehit Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 the heat transfer properties of oil are quite poor compared with water. you are trying to shed heat, not store it.
