damian Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Well summer is almost here and i plan on building a cheap computer just for overclocking, i guess you can say this will be my first time doing something this extreme, as the most i have done is raising the HTT Bus on my AMD system (the most i have overclocked something was 2Mhz ) My AMD 5200 2.6GHz to 2.8GHz (My mobo cant support much thermal wattage) Now because im calling this a project/experiment is because i plan on using dry ice! I also plan on modding a mini fridge I will buy one maybe in Lowes or so then head straight to the bat cave. Im not to sure how i will mod the fridge but i will probably sketch some constructions in school, not paying attention to my history teacher Then again maybe the fridge isnt such a good idea since it will be hard to fit the Dry Ice setup in there, I'll think of something. If i dont go with the fridge I'll probably just have the motherboard and other parts laying on top of a table or something. (not to sure how static will play in this role) I have lots of materials at my house, my dad works with air conditionings so he should help me out, I have alot of insulation, and copper laying around all over my house so ill find something. The problem is that i live in a small city in Texas, and it gets so HOT here. The average temperature is around 100-110F, but thats nothing dry ice wont solve Now im only 16 years old, and this computer is just a side project so money is an issue, i also plan on going to QuakeCon so that only makes matters worse when it comes to money, and time. So far these are the parts that im looking at: cpu - E2180 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116052 mobo - not to sure, im looking for one with a good layout since the massive copper tubes will take up space so far these are on the top of my head abit IP35P - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813127049 MSI P35 Neo2-FR - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16813130098 Any other suggestions? I will also need one with a high FSB or one that can support high thermal wattages as i plan on pushing the E2180 and future mobo to the MAX!!! (price range is no more than $130) RAM (Crucial Ballistix)- http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16820146565 Im looking at the Crucial Ballistix 2X1Gb since they have the Micron D9 for adequate overclocking. But if theres some that you think are better, feel free to post a link. HDD (a cheap WD) - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16822135106 video card - i will use my 3850 PSU - i will use my corsair VX550w OS - no need to spend 100 bucks for a copy of vista when you have linux at your disposal which version to choose though Ubuntu, or what? in the end i will probably sell this computer on Ebay or something. <_< Any questions, suggestions, thoughts? So if you can give some nice links on parts that would be very helpful as well. I will be looking into this the next couple of weeks and like in a month i will start on it Expect lots of pictures, modding, benchmarks, and of course 3DMARK06!!!! (and vantage )
philbrown23 Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 ubuntu will not run 3dmvantage
damian Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Thanks for the heads up. Well I see no point in paying $100 just to run a program so im sticking with a freeware OS (ie. linux) and Vantage is out of the project
damian Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 (edited) just saw this cheap $100 motherboard with an. Would this be a better choice than the MSI P35 Neo2 http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx...N82E16813131278 EDIT: i saw this gigabyte P35 mobo seems of better quality http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128337 Edited May 12, 2008 by damian
Warby35 Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 (edited) Now i'm not much of a science dude but avverage temp of 100-110 + dry ice + fridge + copper = condensaiton + electronics = BANG!!! Maybee i'm compleetly wrong, but its a thought Warby Edit.. just noticed we both joined on the same day and i was 4 places infront of you, na na na na naaa Edited May 12, 2008 by Warby35
kingdingeling Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Overclocking = DFI motherboard! See my post from another thread here: Overclocking? Nothing like a DFI board then! DFI P35 T2RL Blood Iron - 119$ DFI Lanparty DK P35 T2RS - 139$ (Open Box: 99$) If you're looking to go to the dark side of the overclockers world and you want to try out a board that was simply MADE for overclocking and is really cheap now, check out the DFI Lanparty ICFX3200 for 80 bucks! Comp Dude2 Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 hmm.......if you are going to do something like that, you want it to have a point. Do you really think you can beat the world record which currently stands at 4.93Ghz (146%) done with cascade cooling? You should look for something cheap, which is either brand new and therefore doesnt have a record or the current record is beatable (if it was set on water or something)
damian Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 (edited) Comp Dude - I never said i want to be beat the world record, like i said its a project but i like your idea of "trying" to beat a record. maybe i can try out on the Socket 775 Oc Competition Thread king - those motherboards look good and that xpress 3200 looks nice, since its cheap but theres alot of bad reviews saying its unstable even at stock speeds, imaging how it would be at a massive overclock Edited May 12, 2008 by damian
