sunken Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 hi everyone this is my first post. i registered since none in my country had enough knowledge about the specific OC help i needed my system is the following Intel E8400 [email protected] Tuniq Tower 120 Asus Maximus Formula GX9800x2 Super Talent PC8000x4 T1000UB1G5 RAID 0 3200AAKS 320GBx2 SATA2 WD5000YS caviar RE2 500GB SATA2 WD2500JS caviar 250GB Enermax Infiniti 720W CoolerMaster Cosmos S case now i had several issues and hard time to get my rig to POST. i went on something modest which is 500FSB with 8 multiplier the problem is with the ram and random crashes. (blue screen) it seems that no matter what i do i cant get stability... only manually changing all the mem timings made me a little more stable. still not 24/7. jaxstraww Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Modest? Not to say you can't get 4.0ghz on air but that is aggressive. I'm new at the OC but I picked up a few things. First whats your vcore and such. At 4.0ghz you would need to be 1.4x something at least. What are the timings on the RAM your ruinning and the volts?
sunken Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 (edited) here are my bios setting. all setting is according to vdroops and overvolts. (dram bios is overvolting to 2.21 from 2.12) the mem default is 1000mhz at 2.2. so i'm not even overclocking it. my problem is with the timings. too loose and i get poor benches too high no stability. gotdamojo06 Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 when you say stable, how are you concluding that it is stable? what tests are you running? 500x8 is a nice overclock BTW
Verran Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Did you try any other speeds, or did you just jump straight to 4ghz?
sunken Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) i tried many settings i got 4.3ghz on 9 multiplier but i'm looking for something 24\7 and not crazy oc so i want 4ghz rather go for 1:1 on the mems so i need 500fsb x8 cause 500x9 is too hard with stock NB,SB,mosfet heatpipes. well stability talking is that i can't complete 3dmark06 without crash or run COD4 for more than an hour. getting blue screens and hangs. my main problem is the memory not that it is not good. but for some strange reason i have to really set every timings manually to get stability but the manual timings when set are way too high and when trying to get lower timings i keep getting blue screens. my mem is 1000mhz 2.2v default. 5-5-5-15. and already achieved 1200mhz. so it's not a problem of bad chips just poor settings and lack of knowledge about those sticks which r not so common among overclockers like the ballistix tracer n' such. sunken Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 when my computer crashes lcd poster show det dram. it's always dram fault. pcie is 100 for now. cpu volt 1.4250v is too high for me. if i go 4500 i'll try that northbridge is overheating badly even with no oc is at 54 load. dram volt is 2.12 but real one shows in asus probe and everest and other programs is 2.21~2.22 NB overvolts too from 1.42 to 1.49 so setting it to 1.49 will be 1.56 or more. fsb termenation volt is noted 10x. so the dram volt is fine. problem is with Ai Clock Twister and Transaction Booster. they seem to change alot according to straps 400/333. the bottom line is that u have ddr3 and that's a whole diffrent ball game. your stock cooling is much more better than mine. The Smith Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 For your NB temperature, simply install a small fan on its HS. Just increasing air flow between its fins will be far enough. I have done this on my Gigabyte P35-DS3R and since I have have no more problems.
Verran Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 What's the highest you can get to be actually stable? Did you do a slow climb and finally get to something unstable, or did you pick an arbitrary target speed and now you're trying to make it stable? Sounds like you need to back off and find something stable, then climb from there. When you change that much stuff at once, it's pretty much impossible to know which setting needs "fixing". Puck Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Sounds to me like you are ignoring the fact that your memory does not like its auto timings. Drop the multi a click and see if the ram passes occt at 500 MHz and the timings it is rated at. You say with looser manual timings it passes, so your ram may just need an rma if it won't pass at stock speeds and timings. This is besides the fact that 4x1gb sucks for overclocking... You say with looser manual timings it passes, so your ram may just need an rma if it won't pass at stock speeds and timings. This is besides the fact that 4x1gb sucks for overclocking... i'm sorry but i'm not familiar with some of the terms u use. what is aioy timings? is that the timings that go after 5-5-5-15? what is rma? y 4x1gb sucks for overclocking is 2x2gb better? about the other stuff... i'll buy thermalright cooling for mosfet,nb,sb and try again mayb it's a temp issue. i had bad sensor with the e8400 that showed 55 with no oc (so i got it replaced). and now i also got bad temp sensor but it shows 42c~38c for both cores so it's ok now i guess. do u guys know the "safe" temps for sb,nb and cpu for these specs?
