First Ever Overclocking Experience

So my first shot at overclocking, here are pics of my new rig:

http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=77880

Running stock cooling just to learn and see to start with, I will upgrade as needed.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale CPU

Gigabyte P35-DS4 Mobo

EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512mb VideoCard

Crucial Ballistix DDR2 SDRAM 800 (4GB 1GBx4)

Software is working, here is what I downloaded:

1) CPU-Z ver 1.43

2) Core Temp ver 0.96.1

3) Prime 95 ver 25.5

I have read a good number of the OC sticky posts but not sure that I have a good handle on this yet.

So, when running Prime95 I get a CPU core temp of 23-26C at Idle.

That rises to 43-46C running the "torture test" option

(after about 15 minutes-how long should I go and is this the right test?)

Looking at CPU-Z the multiplier is moving between x6 and x9?

CPU Core voltage moves between 1.1-1.2V.

(During the torture test is locked onto 1.2V and the multiplier locked onto x9)

Suggestions on which to play with first?

Mobo settings or CPU settings?

(be gentle, been a member here for awhile for your hardware knowledge, but this is my first crack at OC)

by the way, can't wait to play with that awesome RAM, FSB is 1333!!

And, oh, I see what is happening to the x6-x9, power saving, makes sense when there is no load on the system.

The RAM not "registering" is a 32-bit OS thing.

A 64-bit OS will adress it all and report it properly.

Temps are decent for the stock cooler I'd say (mine are higher), but I have no idea how reliable the temp sensors are at the moment.

Everything looks as it should be to me though.

Ahhh that makes sense that it would be the 32 bit OS... thanks on that.

So, if cooling looks good for baseline, time to start some Overclocking.

You agree that I should OC the mobo first?

I just read the FAQs again, egads.... a first timer really needs a buddy sitting next to him that has done it before.

You can't just read that FAQ and start tweaking based on that info.

Anyone have my mobo/cpu combo that has OC'd yet?

e6600 2.4 oc to 3.53 It took some reading. trials and errors, and pulling out some hair. So need help? Read on. Ok #1 Let go of my hand! #2 Get a note pad write down all the settings that you are changing. #3 Try them out. Hopefully you are doing them one at a time. #4 If it works. Keep on going. If not CMOS. And try something else. And keep records of what you are doing.
