Gimmick Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 (edited) Well, with my job landing me with an extra $1000 or so in about a month, I've been doing a bit of research on building a new rig. The parts are as such from the specified dealers. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad-Core - $289.99 on www.canadacomputers.com Socket LGA775, 2.40 GHZ, 1066 MHz FSB, 8MB L2 Cache, 65nm (Retail Box) (BX80562Q6600) Seagate Barracuda (ST3250410AS) - $74.99 on www.canadacomputers.com 7200.10 250GB SATA2 8.5MS 7200RPM 16MB Cache Hard Drive Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Socket 775 Intel - $98.99 on www.canadacomputers.com P35 + ICH9 Dual-Channel DDR2 1066/800/667/533Mhz GigaLAN 8-Channel Audio Support 1333Mhz FSB Palit 8800GT 512MB (NE/8800T+T352) - $283.99 on www.canadacomputers.com nVidia GeForce 8800GT Chipset (650Mhz) (1800Mhz) 512MB GDDR3 Dual Dual-Link DVI PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card OCZ (OCZ2RPR800C44GK) Reaper 4GB - $149.99 on www.canadacomputers.com DDR2 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-15 Memory Kit OCZ Vendetta CPU Cooler For Sockets - $29.99 on www.canadacomputers.com AMD 754/755/939/AM2, Intel LGA775* O261-2008 :: OCZ / StealthXStream / 600-Watt / ATX / - $97.99 on www.tigerdirect.ca 120mm Fan / SATA-Ready / PCI-e Ready / Active PFC / Power Supply (5.3 lbs) ULT31824 :: Ultra Black Aluminus ATX Mid-Tower Case - $85.99 on www.tigerdirect.ca with Clear Side, Front USB, Firewire and Audio Ports (30 lbs) V13-4001 :: Vantec Tornado 92mm High Speed Case Fan - $18.99 on www.tigerdirect.ca (0.4 lbs) T925-2009 :: ThermalTake Smart Blue 120mm LED Case (X2) - $14.99 x 2 = $29.98 on www.tigerdirect.ca Fan Blue (1.1 lbs) I already have speakers, a monitor, mouse, keyboard, disc drive, this will replace my current tower which I will be giving to a friend. Bleeble Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 RAM is way overpriced. You can double your hard drive space for $25 more. The Vendetta cooler isn't bad, but it certainly isn't the best. Cases are mostly about personal preference, but you can get much higher quality for the same price. This is the same case they've been selling for $30 for years with a different name and higher price. The Tornado is LOUD! You'd better have it on a fan controller. Those 120mm fans are horribly overpriced. No, they're criminally overpriced! Anyone that charges that much for fans, especially crappy ones, deserves to spend time in prison. Apart from the above, everything else looks good to me. :thumbs-up:

The HDD is fine really, I'm more a gamer than giant media guy. The Vendetta I've read is a great cooler, but I've never used one before, and the tornado is to replace the stock 92mm on the Vendetta. I like the tornado, had one in my old case and the noise didn't bother me too much. The 120's are $14.99 a piece, I'm getting two for the case and with 90+ cfm with minimal noise I think they look ok. (I really don't know, the next step down in fans is the Vantec stealth at $12.99 with like 40cfm.) Again, I'm trying to iron out the wrinkles in my new rig, and any help is much appreciated. If you've got any further info or help that'd be awesome Bleeble.
Bleeble Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 First, the 90CFM is a flat-out lie. Second, the dBA rating is almost certainly a lie too. If you want real ratings, check out Yate Loon fans. I believe that NCIX stocks them. If I can get 2GB of good RAM for less than $40, you should be able to find 4GB for well under $150. Just check other etailers to see if they have better deals. And stay away from fancy looking stuff with weird shapes or flashing lights, it's almost always a reason to charge more for crappy RAM. At least you took the time to ask questions before buying instead of showing up to brag after you bought your new machine, only to find out that you wasted a bunch of money. Will you be overclocking this?

Bleeble Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 (edited) Thats a nice case with lots of features. and it is freakin HUGE Huge? Ultra Aluminus: 18.6 x 8.7 x 20.55 CM Stacker: 23.0 x 8.9 x 21.1 I guess "huge" is a matter of perspective. If you want real ratings, check out Yate Loon fans. I believe that NCIX stocks them. No, neither of them is a lie The Smartfans can be controlled with a knob on a PCI bracket that comes with it. The CFM rating would be the highest possible (in other words, the next loudest thing to your computer would be a F16 jet ). Believe me, I used to have one on my CPU cooler, but replaced it because the LEDs were ticking me off. I still have it in the attic. Will you be overclocking this? I will, to about 3.0ghz and that's about it for now. The only 2gb kits on www.canadacomputers.com that are $40 or under are from A-Data, a company I've never heard of. www.tigerdirect.ca has only one 2gb kit for $40 and that's the Corsair value select kits. NCIX's cheapest PC6400 ram is $30 for 1gb. If you know an etailer that sells quality 2gb kits for $40 or so, please let me know. Also, how are the fan readings a lie? I doubt thermaltake lies about their products like that, but that's just me. Edited December 2, 2007 by Gimmick
kingdingeling Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Sadly enough, the A-Data's at canadacomputers are the crappy sticks. The A-Data Extreme Edition sticks are awesome indeed
Gimmick Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 These look okay, just a bit hesitant because it's $40, (Not to say good things cant come cheap, it's just rare they do.) http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...&CatId=2264
kingdingeling Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Their CAS5 though, and most likely will have crappy ICs
Gimmick Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 The 4gb 2x2gb Reaper kit from OCZ for $125 after MIR seems like the cheapest 4gb available on Canada shipping etailers without going for crap quality. I honestly looked and 4gb of anything was always well over $150 or so, very annoying as I'm on a semi strict $1100 budget with most of that taken up already.
