HomerJaySimpson Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 I'm wanting to upgrade my cpu as i found overclocking makes little difference. I am able to get 260fsb, but i'd rather just get an X2 for better multitasking, since i'm looking to get another monitor...Got socket 939 at the min and wanna stick with it for a while as i love this board. One prob i'm having though, is it's very hard to find a 4400. Stores mostly stock 4200 and 4600. I know there is a smaller cache on the 4200, but will it make a huge difference? Any guys in the uk know anywhere to get a 4400? I don't wanna switch to AM2, since that would mean new board + ram...
DECwakeboarder Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Seems like AMD has stopped production of the 4400...I can't find it anywhere. May want to look at some local shops for the 4400.
fumduck Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Can you get your hands on an opteron?? like 165 or 170/175... Those seem to bemaking headway and coming down in price..
caffeinejunkie Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Production was stopped on all 1mb cache (and 2x1mb) for skt939 ages ago. Your best bet like already stated would be to get a 165 but if you cant get your hands on one then shoot for a 3800x2. Dirt cheap and they still overclock fairly well (testing 300x9 w/ 1.45v right now).
kingdingeling Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 wow, never knew that caffeine, lucky me I got one still! If you can, get an Opteron 165-180 or a 4400/4800+, as those are the 2x1MB cache ones. If not, I would shoot for a 3800+ as caffeine suggested
fire_storm Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 The really only difference is that the 4200+ has only 1mb L2 cach while the 4400+ has 2mb. The 4600+ same as the 4200+ but runs 200mhz faster at 2.4ghz.
HomerJaySimpson Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 I think i'll go for the 4200 if i can't find any 4400's on ebay...
hardnrg Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 (edited) the difference in performance between manchester and toledo/denmark at the "usual" max oc's seems to be even smaller than the difference between venice and sandiego/venus... edit: *cough* Edited November 25, 2006 by hardnrg
caffeinejunkie Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 3800 has a 10x multi. Im just running 300x9 because my memory tops out at 270mhz so that setting is perfect.
hardnrg Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 i'd suggest pushing the cpu as far as it can go cos you might be able to run like 10x295 or something and use the same "divider"... surely the cpu has more in it?
CrackHead Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Tehee I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and I love it. I am kinda curious as to why they stopped selling them personally. Not being all that confident in my OCings skills I have yet to toy with it, which is dumb on my part since I have a LanParty UT SLI-DR. But there out there somewhere you just have to look hard enough you find one eventually. With Chistmas coming up and new cpu's to be had I may part with mine, PM if still have had no luck in finding one. (Sry moderators for the above statment as it belongs elsewhere, I just figured to through that in to help him out, especially since I am uncertain if I will do so).
