File Compressing

Newport

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Canon S80 a few weeks back and i have been taking some very detailed pics and i have came across a problem.

Even after saving them as .jpeg, the least detailed pictures are several MB in size and its keeping me from sending these pics over e-mail. What program, besides PS, winrar, or winzip, do you use to make the file size smaller? Is there another way i can save these to save space?

Jpeg is already a compressed file format. Zipping a jpeg won't get you anywhere because it's already compressed to start with. It's like zipping an MP3.

AFAIK, there's not much more you can do to a Jpeg file.

why are you sending them via email?

if it's just to show someone, then i usually resize the pics so they are about 900 pixels high or less so the person doesn't have to scroll or view it resized...

if it's for PRINTING, then you should "send" the pic at full resolution and quality via an intermediate file hosting place like fileden.com (50MB per file limit) or ohshare.com (80MB per file limit) and just send the corresponding download url via email
