OptikaliLLusion Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 The router: D-Link DI-524 The internet service: Verizon FIOS 15Mbit The place: My house I recently got a D-Link DI524. It is in the same place my old router (Apple AIrPort) used to be. I got it because I needed something with a higher than 11Mbit transfer rate to support my FIOS (which doesn't run at its full speed, but that's another story). So I get this nifty thing, it was cheap at Best Buy and D-Link has been a good company which made the card I used. I get it along with two D-Link AirPlus ExtremeG cards. So I install it, set up PPPoE, etc. It is in the same spot the AirPort was, meaning it has to go through two doors to get to my room, but get this: With the AirPort, I got a Very good signal. With this, I get a Low, Very Low, or No Signal. How can I extend the signal without having to move the router?
GuJuMaN89 Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 you can get signal boosters, try setting a difference frequency, are u using a differnet card on ur comp>
Byron Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 try a higher channel like 10 or 11, then also try a signal booster and/or return the d-link and get a linksys or something with dual dipole antennas. The only thing is that would cost more about the same as a good quality router. I just bought a linksys WRT54GS, its got speedbooster so it can run 35% faster then 54mbps. I'm 2 rooms away, and i have an excellent signal, and I can also get an excellent signal "80% signal strength" "100% link quality" on my step-dads laptop downstairs. Oh, my access points are smc 2662w's which are usb access points, i'm planning on getting a linksys that supports the speedbooster tech. Folding_Buddha Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 Use tin foil and make like a little dish around it and point it toward your wireless receiver, I saw it on thescreensavers.
OptikaliLLusion Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 I've heard of that Buddha, but I have also heard it leaks harmful waves. Is that true?
Silverfox Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 I've heard of that Buddha, but I have also heard it leaks harmful waves. Is that true? 498457[/snapback] i doubt it! if wireless internet was in any way more harmful that other EMF radiated, it'd be a worldwide issue pringles tubes can be used to detect wirelss networks lol

Aliencam Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 it doesn't always depend on the router, it depends on the construction of the house a lot, and interference, and LOS and everything. if you build something like a cantenna super wireless stuff guide (including building a homebrew cantenna) http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/133/44/ then you will just need to point that in the direction of your router. other ways to increase wireless signal range are buying high gain antennas, access points, and changing hte channel until you find one with less interference or higher signal strength. i say an access point would be your best bet, although the tinfoil dish does work slightly (but you have to take the top cap off of your wifi card antenna and touch it to the actual inside of the antenna) or my favorite, is to upgrade to an a-2 or a-extreme wireless network, its supposed to be many times better than 52g wireless-G. ... which means its time for me to get a new router. -g is outdated. lol
