Weird Stuttering Issue With My Machine. Any Ideas

Hey all,

specs:

AMD 64 3400+

1 gig of 400Mhz DDR ram Kingston value

Sapphire ATI X800 XT

Audigy 2.0

60 gig 7200 RPM Western Digital

120 gig 7200 RPM Western Digital

Monitor is a 21 inch samsung 213T LCD

Motherboard is a Gigabyte K8VNXP

I got this weird problem where some games have this weird "stutter". I put it in quotes because it's not a real stutter because fraps doesn't detect a frame rate drop.

For example in Max Payne 2 if I set the game in pause mode about every 11 seconds it would do this weird stutter flash thing and then continue on rotating smoothly for another 11 seconds. Again it's not a frame rate drop, and isn't TOO noticable but it's there and kinda annoying.

It also happens in MOH:AA, but it seems more random there.

With both games I have vsync set to on because I hate tearing. However let me make this clear that it's not a frame rate drop.

Also I know it's not my video card because if I plug in my good old Radeon 9800 pro, it does the same stuttering the same exact way.

Any ideas on what this is?

i used to get this stuttuer alot when i had my amd machine, its like 1sec freezes right? first off grab a copy of disk keep and second turn off indexing service make sure your disk is always defraged , the reason for the stutter is from other thign accessing the harddrive causeing a slight delay , oddly i have never seen this with my intel machine and is one of the main reasons i jumped to intel,

No it's not a 1 sec stutter. Maybe quarter of a second. It's almost like the screen just jitters slightly every 11 seconds or so.

I have indexing disabled and my hard drive is not fragmented.

Any ideas?

Edit: It's not my ram either, I ran memtest86 on it for 11 hours and it passed every single time.

Does it happen when you turn vsync off?

I haven't tried it without vsync, but I'd rather keep vsync on. I hate tearing even more than this much more subtle stuttering. But I'd like to fix the stuttering too.

Well.. you don't have to keep vsync off, it would just be nice to see if that solved the problem. At least you would know the cause if that was the case.

My LCD runs at 60hz refresh rate, but unlike a CRT monitor a LCD is locked into 60hz refresh and it doesn't give you a massive headache.

None of my CRTs give me a massive headache. What are you talking about?
