camaro_dude15 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 i'm in the process of building a prusa mendel i2 printer and have planned on using an atx power supply, and from what i understand i need about 500 watt single 12v rail psu to run it comfortably (with a heated bed and prospects of dual extrusion), now as a performance pc builder i have it stuck in my mind i need a quality psu, active pfc, reputable brand, modular would be nice. the arduino mega is by no means a pricey piece of equipment but should i spend 60-70 bucks for a good psu when the board can be had for 12? or should i do like everyone else and get the cheapest thing that says 500 on it tell me what you think
dr_bowtie Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 we buy 50.00 motherboards for our PCs.... do we buy the cheapest PSU then?
camaro_dude15 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 no, but this whole thing has me really confused, even the websites that sell everything 3d printer has bottom of the line psu's i was think maybe this cougar but even this coolmax has active pfc and 500w continuous and is 80 plus the more i think about it the all the people that keep recomending the 500w number are trying to stay on the safe side AND are using very cheap psu that probably aren't actually 500 continuous maybe 500 peak i think the problem is the type of people that build 3d printers over buying them are "makers" people that enjoy making things and things that make things, a lot of pc builders are "makers", but a lot of "makers" are not enthusiast pc builders. if that last bit did not make sense just pretend i didn't post it

El_Capitan Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 (edited) A couple months ago I bought locally an older PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W and a 1000W both for $80. You might be able to find something locally for a reasonable price. I also got this on Amazon for $27.72 a while ago: Silverstone Tek 500W Single +12V Rail ATX 12V v2.3 80 Plus Gold Certified Active PFC Power Supply ST50F-ESG Just be patient, you'll always find a great deal for cheap.
