Universe Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 The time has come for me to get a new video card before my current one gives out, a Radeon HD 5870 that the fan bearing is about to go on. I'm looking at either the R9 280x or the GTX 770 and would like to hear what some opinions are on these two model lines or if there are any others I should be looking at. For the R9 280x I'm looking at the, ASUS R9 280X-DC2T-3GD5-V2 (http://www.asus.com/ca-en/Graphics_Cards/R9280XDC2T3GD5V2/) or ASUS MATRIX R9 280X-P-3GD5 (http://www.asus.com/ca-en/Graphics_Cards/MATRIXR9280XP3GD5/) or Tracking down a 7870 or 7990 For the GTX 770 I'm looking at, EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Dual Classified w/ ACX Cooler 4GB (http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-3778-KR) or Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 WindForce 3X 4GB (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4647#sp) For my desktop I've always had an ATI card and in all the notebooks I've had there has been an NVIDIA, so I'm not in favour of one brand over the other. For gaming I run the resolution in 1920x1080 and don't play many of the current popular games that are graphically intensive. The only game that I'm trying to have at least a decent graphic setting and fps on is Star Citizen. My 5870 can run the hangar but the fps is extremely low. It should be noted that I'm still running a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard, I know I won't be getting everything out of a PCI-E 3.0 card. Any advise on card choice is appreciated. aaron6581230 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 280x/7970 and GTX770 are pretty much neck and neck. Get whichever one is cheaper, I'd say. Mantle will be coming soon for 280x, so that may be something to consider. Same with G-Sync on GTX770.
IVIYTH0S Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I'd say the 280x is all round better though really at 1080P either would do...get whichever is cheaper
RedFury77 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 If you do any recording at all, then Nvidia's ShadowPlay will win out, other than that it's pretty much a tie. I like that windforce card best.
Universe Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Since ASUS cards are hard to come by, Canada Computers is backordered by -50, how does the Gigabyte R9 280X OC 3GB (http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4845#sp) compare to ASUS? I've never used Gigabyte products before and only really know of them from their motherboards. From the pictures of the card it may appear to have better ventilation. 96andrei Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 There shouldn't be any performance difference between ASUS and Gigabyte version of the same card. I'd go for the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 WindForce 3X 4GB if there's no big price difference. You never know when nVidia exclusive features such as TXAA, PhysX and Shadow Play may come in handy. Braegnok Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I can give a solid +1 for the 280X Matrix,.. for Gaming on single monitor running 1920X1080 it does vary well.
VaporX Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 If you want to keep the cost down and have great performance the Sapphire 280X Dual X is a great card, if you want the BEST 280X performance then the Sapphire 280X Toxic. I am using a Toxic right now with BF on Ultra @ 1080 and I play most of my games on high or ultra at 1440. During load it is whisper quite and not seen temps over 69C in any game. Krieg1337 Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Either one is great. Although with the recent litecoin mining surge the 280X is around $500 in the US, so if it is that high where you live as well skip it and get the GTX 770. Universe Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Thanks for the advice. Went with the Gigabyte R9 280X OC Windforce rev. 2 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4845#ov), it was $399.99 from Canada Computers. Due to the card's (R9s) popularity, they had very few of them in stock.
