Overclocking and Cooling

I'm researching for a PC upgrade, & deciding between 1100t & 8120.

As per my research a 1100t @4ghz looked like a better option, But the I'm not sure if I'll be able to overclock due to very high ambient.

Last year (thanks to global warming  ) the hottest temp., breaking a 30-year-old record was 41.7C . Room temperature won't necessarily be that high, but still it'll be pretty high. Idk MAYBE around 35C during those hot days. On an avg. for most time of the year it'll be(Room temp.) anywhere between 20 - 32C approx.

For cooling, I was planning to get Lian Li pc k63(Mod- 140mm side fan) or NZXT Tempest Evo & for HSF - Silver Arrow

Summer's around the corner & it'll surely hit 40C :glare:

With a good case and good airflow it'll be just fine...

If you have the money for a 8120 then why not get a 2500K instead? I'm not dissing on AMD here (I too am an AMD fanboy) but their current Bulldozer can't beat the 2500K for an all purpose rig unless you're encoding and stuff that need's multi threads.

Don't be blaiming global warming our climate has been both far hotter and far colder throughout history

Anyways,

Things that I want to buy, CPU, HSF, Mobo, Memory, PSU, Case.

Already own a HD 6750 1gb & a 1 TB HDD

Planned rig (For 3d/2d applications eg: Photoshop & a fair amount of gaming):

CPU - 1100t/ 8120

HSF - Silver Arrow*/ nh d14/ h60

Mobo - Biostar Ta990fxe*/ Asus m5a99x evo/ Ga 990fxa ud3

Memory - Ripjaws X 4x4gb

PSU - Corsair tx750v2

Case - Lian Li pc k62* - k63(Mod- 140mm side fan) or NZXT Tempest Evo

* If I go with the 8120

I know how good the 2500k is, but idk if i'll be able to afford a good mobo to OC it.

I wanted to know if Overclocking is possible (in my ambient) or not, Coz if not I would revise the planned rig.

@Stonerboy779 My current rig is useless except my GPU & HDD. & my Ultimate budget is approx $750 USD (I'm not from USA, but a rig under $700-750 USD would fit my budget)

Like I said, with a good airflow, it'll be just fine even if you overclock it.

There's nothing wrong with 8120/1100t really, even for gaming and photoshop. Just that if you go for 2500K, you can get some more performance for your money (say it more 'bang for buck' if you will  )

I really think that 16GB of RAM is not necessary. 8GB is more than enough. I have an old AMD rig that has 4GB of RAM and can still handle BF3 with iTunes syncing my iPod on the background and firefox. When Photoshop fired up, took 3GB at most..

The H60 would be a waste of money IMO. It cost less then the D14 or SA but that just ain't worth the temperature gain and noise gain... Stick with the D14..

Also, I'd say that 750w is an overkill since even a 600w should be more than enough for an 1100T with 6750.

I'll give a suggestion of 2500K built for you to consider

-i5 2500K (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072) - $229.99

-ASRock Z68 Extreme4 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157264) - $184.99

-Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB White 1.35v (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233199) - $49.99

-Noctua NH-D14 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018) - $89.99

-Seasonic S12II 620W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151096) - $69.99

-NZXT Tempest Evo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146062&Tpk=NZXT%20tempest%20Evo) - $109.99

Total: A shy under USD $735

Great suggestion man!

A few queries :

Will an Oc'd 2500k (4.4-4.5ghz) be as good as the i7 2600 non "k"?

Is this Mobo. good? (I'm not gonna use sli or crossfire, even in the future)

Also I forgot to mention that I have an extrenal Hard drive as well & planning to add another internal HDD in the future. For a 4.4- 4.5ghz OC, & everything else, would a 650w 80+ Bronze PSU be enough?

The i7 2600K/2600 is basically an i5 2500K/2500 with multi-thread, bigger cache (6 vs 8MB) and high clock speed. You wouldn't feel any major difference in performance (probably in heavy threaded apps you might) So it's better to get a 2500K variant then a i7 2600 sans K variant IMO.

Yes, the Extreme3 Variant is a good board as well. It's basically just the younger brother of the board I listed (Extreme4).

But the Extreme4 has a better OC potential as far as I know. Or you could get a Gigabyte Z68XP UD4/3 since they also overclock well.

Even at Peak Load (all maxed out at 100%) and Overclocked 2500K and a 6750 shouldn't take more than 500W so a 650W would go a long way.. I would reccomend a Seasonic or Corsair since Seasonic are widely known for silent and reliability operation and the <1000W Corsair PSU are basically Seasonic units.

Van put together a solid proposed build for you. Like him, I'd also go with the 2500K over the 2600 vanilla (non K version). You do lose the 2Mb of cache and hyperthreading, but in it's place you get o/c potential that will easily make up the difference for those tradeoffs.

The ASRock Extreme4 is a good board, but then again so is the Gigabyte UD3 or UD4. You won't go wrong with any of those three boards. Keep in mind, that if you chose the UD3, there are at least three variants of it so you can choose the model that has the features that best suite your needs. They generally range in price from about $150 up to $190 bucks. Sounds to me like the standard GA-Z68XP-UD3 version would probably meet all of your needs though, and that board can be had for right at $150 bucks.

I'm not hating on your AMD choices, but to me the 2500K just seems to be a better performance to value proposition for most folks looking for a decent build in your budget range.

I'm from India & Online stores are substandard. They don't have all the products that are available in the market.

These are the best options available :glare:

Can't look now at your sites but I will say one thing sandybrige CPUs overclock damn well I can push mine on stock volts to 4.3GHz with a cheap mobo that only has a 4phase power supply. With a small bump in volts it can run stable at 4.5GHz clocking higher that that would require better cooling than my cm 212+ and single fan.

Sandybrige is the better way to go you will get higher clocks and better performance with the 2500k than with either of the and processors you where looking at.
