Overclocking i5 2500k

Hey!

Soon I will be buying Intel Core i5-2500K CPU with CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO cooler, ASUS P8P67-M PRO motherboard and 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600 MHz RAM (I already have MSI Nvidia 560Ti GPU and Corsair TX650 PSU) and I was wondering are all these components compatible and how far can I go with overclocking my CPU with that cooler?

Thanks!

(and sorry if I posted this in the wrong category, because this is mostly overclocking question)

I would get a better cooler. The 212 + is a great bang for the buck but lacks hsp for good overclocks on Sandybridge. Get the Noctua D-14 if it doesn't put a dent in the budget. Also I would get Z68 motherboard like the Asrock z68 extreme 3 or 4

I would do that but it isn't available in my country, would ZALMAN CNPS10X Flex maybe be enough?

Well, time to bust your balls Dr. Death (all in good fun of course) :P

The 212 evo is a handy little tool for overclocking your i5. While it probably would not get your i5 to a magical 5ghz, it has been well documented that it can hit 4.6ghz with great temps, and depending on how many volts your particular CPU needs and your ambient air temp, it could go up to 4.8.

Something you do need to understand though is that every chip overclocks differently. There are some people who can get really lucky and use really low volts to get to 5 ghz with a the cooler master V6 GT (and I have seen one instance where they used the 212+, but I am not inclined to trust them), and there are some people that are really UNlucky who have to use higher volts for a stable 4.5 ghz overclock and they would have to use something like a NZXT havic. However, I have never seen someone so unlucky that they have to use the NH-D14 to reach 4.5 ghz on the i5.

I would say that as long as your ambient temp is at about 20C, then you should be able to get to 4.6 or above depending on how your particular i5 was binned. At the very least, you should be able to get to 4.5 ghz.

Here is a video for proof. It is a very very VERY crappy video, but it definitely back up my statement............any other misconceptions about the 212 series you want to show us Dr. Death :P ?

If you want to get better overclocking, then go grab another CM fan for the push pull configuration, or get two silver stone air penetrator fans. Either one of those options would be a lot wiser than buying a noctua NH-D14

I never planned to go over 4.5 so I should be find with 212 if I have some luck, right?

Yeup! You would have to be living in the desert to not be able to hit 4.5. I would recommend you aim for 4.8 though

Oh, and welcome to OCC

Ok nut bust back. I have a 2500k and 2600k ohhh and a 212+. 4.2 Ghz with reasonable temps. All the 212+ will get him. Any more questions TJ? I have various coolers and water to put on many CPUs...... The 212+ will be adeqaute till 4.2GHz to 4.3GHz. That is it. Also dependent on the chip. he may get 4.4Ghz or so with a binned chip. The video shown does not prove that is a stable overclock. 1 question..

Do you own the chip and the 212+? nough said

I will be happy to reinstall the cooler on my 2500k if needed. It aint gonna get close to 4.8 GHz in the desert.

Okay... I also heard from a friend from a friend who has 212+ and i5 2500k that he got to 4.6 with reasonable temperatures... I don't know now... I will try with 212+ and hope for the best I guess...

Wow, either you did something wrong, or you are just really unlucky. I understand where you are coming from.....I think. The reality is though, he should be able to hit 4.5 easily. Also, this is not the 212+, this is the 212 evo. So you aren't even commenting on the right cooler.

Look, here is a newegg review

"Great Cooler for the price

Pros: Keeps my i7 2600k nice and cool at 4.5Ghz my temps where at 55c after 13hours of prime95.

it's tons better then the stock Intel cooler.

Cons: The CPU contact surface could of been a little better machined (it's pretty deeply cut).

Didn't deduct an egg because of price can't really ask for anything better.

Other Thoughts: The thermal paste I am using is Gelid Extreme GC-3.

I mite try lapping the base of the cooler later on and see what I can get out of it.

System spec:

Intel i7 2600k @ 4.5Ghz @ 1.300v with 100% LLC

XFX 6970 in CrossFire @ 900/1400

ASUS maximus IV extreme-z

OCZ Vortex 3 60GB SSD

Corsair 1600 9-9-9-24 4x2GB 8GB kit

Corsair TX850W PSU

Cooler Master HAF-X Tower "

Mind you that is the i7, not the i5 so this is plenty of insurance. Dr. Death, I really think you should post under the overclocking forum to see what is going on with your CPU(s). If you can't hit 4.4-4.5, then something is wrong. I am sort of curious if the isn't a problem with the board perhaps? Maybe something is overvolting your CPU like it did with my original mobo.

It could just be that you are really THAT unlucky. However, you can't deny that the average OC for the 212 evo and the i5 is about 4.5 ghz. Hell, I just saw a video that some guy got 4.5 ghz on the stock cooler. Granted his temps were in the mid 80s, but still. That was with the stock paste and everything, so why couldn't you reasonably lower the temps by 20 degrees with the 212 evo and good TIM? Dr. Death, I understand that you have a bad situation with temps, but that does not mean that everyone is in the same boat as you. I do think that you add a healthy dose of skepticism to the 212+, but we talking about the 212 evo. It pushes more air, and it does a better job of cooling. Everything in the universe points to the OP hitting at LEAST 4.5 ghz. I would go so far as to bet my left foot that as long as he has a well ventilated case and reasonable ambient room temp that he could hit 4.5 ghz. If nothing else, he could install that second fan, and I would be god smacked if he could not get a good overclock.

Also, the OP has a great mobo for overclocking. It is a solid asus mobo. No need for z68.

I am at work skippy. It may be the EVO. I will put it on the bench when I get home. Quit pulling off the net and please use cliff notes. Your responses are so long nobody reads them or stops half through.

My posts aren't long, they are through :P . Also, reading is good for you. It strengthens the mind my friend ;) . If someone doesn't want to read through my posts, then I guess they aren't all that interested in solving the problem now are they?

In addition, could you post your results under overclocking with your BIOS settings and hardware? I am really curious to see what is up with your setup and why you are getting the temps that you are.

Going to have to agree with TJ on this one. My 212+ could do 4.5 on my i7 with temps only in the low 60's 24 hours stable on prime95. And that's just the 212+. not the EVO. I would think that given the performance of the EVO, he should hit 4.5GHz easily.
