Help me out - OC

Soo something isn't right. My BIOS won't let me go past 3.4ghz no matter what I do. I've always had it on 3.4 because, that's just what I decided a long time ago. But today I wanted to push it further. When I try to set my multiplier to anything higher, nothing happens. I leave my BIOS and it says I'm sitting at 3.6 but AMD Overdrive says 3.4 so does CPUz.

And It also seems my Voltage isn't increasing? It was never at the stock 1.32, not sure how my 3.4 right now is stable since my voltage is at stock. But when I try to increase voltage nothing happens as well.

Motherboard: Biostar TA790GX (i know right, need to get rid of this thing!)

CPU: Phenom II 940

PSU: Antec Eco Neo 620w

Now I just want to do a simple overclock. So I'm not looking to mess with anything other than multiplier and voltage. Thanks for the help guys. I might be asleep by the time people reply to this so be patient :P

Oh and happy birthday to me :D

Hmm, that's strange. I used pretty much the same board to overclock an x4 620 to 3.4ghz...which i know isn't at all what you wanted to hear. It was a while ago but I believe it was the chip holding it back as I could lower the multiplier and run a higher base clock.

Maybe try running the 17x multi but bumping up the base clock, even if this isn't the overclocking method you'd like, we can make progress.

Perhaps write down all your settings, and revert back to stock/factory settings and put them back in.

Also check and see if there are any newer bios updates for you

and a Happy Birthday to YOU! (how old be ye?)

hmm. It's a black edition CPU so I should be able to set the multiplier as high as I want, as you already know.

I'll try to see if I can increase the base clock just to see if I can get over 3.4

Thanks! I'm 20 years old

One more year and you can give that emoticon some greater meaning!! (legally  )

Yeah, we can still work at getting the multi overclocking working. I'm just curious if this may be an alternative if we can't ya know.

  • 1 month later...

Could be a consideration to try something other than increasing the ratio? My ratio only pushes so far, to get anything higher I have to increase the core clock.

Be warned though, the core clocks on Phenoms are harder to overclock than just pushing the ratio, and also a little more risky. Just try lowering the ratio before pushing the clock up, then once you've found a stable core clock, tick the ratio back up a little at a time.
