overclock i7930

hi Guys

 

got my CM HAF-X yesterday and is quite impressed with it but cant say more than the installation was a breeze and the cooling is good especially on the graphics cards.

 

i want to do a overclock on my cpu to about 3.3ghz to 3.5ghz permanently that i think is not too high.

 

would my 1333Mhz memory be a problem?

 

any good beginners guides you can recommend for a noob overclocker? :biggrin:

Good morning Merc. 3.3 - 3.5Ghz on a decent i7 930 won't be an issue at all. And neither will using DDR3 1333 memory.

 

There are tons and tons of good guides already written about overclocking the i7. I'd recommend that you read them so you understand how to get to where you want to be, and what effects changing certain settings in your BIOS do for your overclocking results, system stability, or risk of damage.

 

I'll give you a rough starting point though. These are all "safe" with decent cooling - ALWAYS monitor your cpu temperatures when overclocking!

 

BCLK = 165

CPU Multiplier = 21 (resulting CPU frequency will be 3.465 with Intel Turbo Boost OFF - or 3.630 with Intel Turbo Boost ON)

QPI Multiplier = Auto

Uncore Multiplier = Auto

Memory = DDR3 1325 (memory multiplier - 8)

 

CPU Voltage = 1.25v if you disable Intel Turbo Boost

CPU Voltage = 1.28v if you enable Intel Turbo Boost

 

QPI/VTT Voltage = 1.25v

i have read a few guides but not hundred percent sure.i also understand not to leave any of the voltages on auto?

 

my temps currently on stock is 39c on idle and 65c on full load.

YW - honestly any i7 paired with a good board is a snap to overclock up to 3.6Ghz without even much of a hiccup. My recommended CPU voltage may be a little aggressive to start - but can always be lowered later.

 

Regarding voltages - I've got a simple rule of thumb for simple (not insane overclocks) if you don't know what they do leave them alone (Auto)

 

For sane o/c's on the 1366 socket all you really need to focus on is cpu voltage, qpi/vtt voltage and dram voltage. If for some reason you need to go to the secondary voltages, then you would be adjusting CPU PLL, IOH and ICH voltages. But again, for what you're wanting to achieve we shouldn't even have to do that.

 

If I didn't mention it above leave it on Auto to start with.

Does HT make huge diffrence?

with it disabled my temps are down by quite alot.

i am currently on 3.5ghz with my max temp being 60c under 100% stress for 15 min.

That's an ongoing argument :)

 

HT helps when performing certain tasks - encoding, decoding, compression, archiving etc. as examples.

 

However the general consensus is that HT is of little use improving FPS games or when running apps that aren't optimized for multicore cpus or hyperthreading.

 

The most common argument for keeping HT enabled is that "I've got it so I'm gonna use it".

 

It definitely increases your cpu heat under load though. 10-15C higher under load isn't uncommon. Additionally, when overclocking with HT enabled you may have to use more cpu voltage to get the same stability, than if HT were disabled.

i have run sevral intel burn tests and prime95 for 2 hours non stop and my max temp was 61c and solid as a rock.

 

i have crappy thermal paste at the moment must order new better quality ones

 

can the core voltage do any damage if it is too low?

 

i am at 1.088V at the moment.

"Undervolting" shouldn't really be a problem if the system doesn't crash. What did you test IBT on? did you test threads on AUTO or 8 with HT on? Could you post some screenshots with it saying its successful?

 

For IBT you should use "Maximum" as for that option and for Threads use "8" if you have HT, if off I think AUTO is fine.

For Prime 95 I think your suppossed to use the second option(the one that says maximum power/heat consumption). Although I think Small FFT's(first option) might be the one, not sure on that.

 

Test IBT for at least 15, preferably 20 rounds.

Prime95 I would go with 8 hours or more to test for stability in longer times of stressing the CPU.

1. Leave HT on or proceed to sell your platform for an i5 ;)

 

2. Also what TIM are we talking about here?? As long as it isn't stock heatsink stuff you won't see a big difference with a "top-shelf" TIM.

I used whatever nameless stuff that came with my Zalman and it works great.

 

Awesome voltage!! The lower the better, 65c is plenty fine for 3.6ghz for a cooler like yours. Since you have deemed it stable, you could even try lowering the voltage even further to lower your load temps and power consumption :thumbsup:

this ia a IBT for 20 Rounds with HT enabled.

 

HT increases my temps with up to 13c at 100% load while i was doing the IBT.

 

is 73c safe for my CPU?

 

IVIYTHOS i know your cooler is way better , do you have HT enabled with your 4.2ghz overclock?

I'm running 85c (load of course), 100c is the safe top end of these chips I probably wouldn't push over 90c though. I'm plenty comfortable with anywhere under 90c though
